An American woman was found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning in a Mexico City apartment on the same day three other Americans, all friends, died in a similar manner in a different apartment.

Angélica Arce, 29, had met with her siblings Marco Arce and Andrea Arce, to watch the 2022 Mexico Grand Prix, in the Mexican capital and attended a practice run of the Formula 1 race on October 28.

The siblings returned to the apartment that night and woke up feeling ill the following day. However, Angélica and Andrea were the only ones who visited a local doctor, who diagnosed them with heat exhaustion.

They remained in the apartment not knowing that they had been exposed to carbon monoxide. On October 30, Marco woke up to find Angélica dead.

'Lifted her hair and she was purple. So scared,' Marco told San Diego ABC affiliate KGTV 10News.

Marco and Andrea spent four days at a Mexico City hospital receiving treatment for carbon monoxide poisoning.

Their grieving parents traveled from San Diego to Mexico City to help out with the arrangements to bring back Angélica's remains back to the U.S.

That same day, authorities found Virginia resident Kandace Florence, 28, and New Orleans residents Jordan Marshall, 28, and Courtez Hall, 33 dead inside their Airbnb apartment rental in the Mexico City borough of Cuajimalpa de Morelos.

The three friends had traveled there to partake in the Day of the Dead festivities.

According to Norfolk NBC affiliate WAVY, Florence had informed her boyfriend during a conversation on the night of October 30 that she was not feeling well.

The phone call suddenly dropped and after failing to get her back on the phone, he reached out to the Airbnb host and asked them if they could visit the residence for a wellness check.

Lindsey Clevenger first met Florence Kandace - one of the three people who died from carbon monoxide inhalation in a Mexico City Airbnb - when they were attending fourth grade. 'When I started going to Strawbridge Elementary School in the 4th grade, you knew I was the new girl and instantly befriended me,' she wrote on Facebook on Monday. 'You found out we lived in the same neighborhood and introduced me to everyone. You would ride your bike to my house and ring my doorbell just to hang out almost every day. You got close to my family and everyone loved you. We shared countless of memories together.'

Security at the apartment complex requested the assistance of the Mexico City police after detecting a strong gas odor from the trio's apartment, the Mexico City prosecutor's office told DailyMail.com.

The families of Marshall and Florence traveled to Mexico City, but immediately encountered problems with the U.S. embassy and local authorities because of the language barrier.

'To lose your child is one thing, but in a whole other country and having to maneuver language barriers and travel and trying to get his body home, it's been a lot,' Marshall's mom, Jennifer Marshall, told WAVY.

Marshall and Hall were both teachers in New Orleans and Florence operated a candlelight business.

Florence's sister-in-law Alyssa Gordon shared a heartfelt message Tuesday night on Facebook as the family sought support as friends, family and kind strangers contributed to a fundraising drive that was set up on GoFundMe.

'We've been taking time as a family to grieve and process. She was traveling for fun with two of her friends and all 3 bodies were found in an apartment unresponsive,' Gordon wrote. ' Authorities are still investigating to figure out what happened. We are raising funds to help us get back East for her funeral. Please share and support. Keep our family in prayer.'

On Monday, Lindsey Clevenger penned a Facebook message for Florence, her best friend of almost two decades, who befriended her in grade school in Virginia Beach.

'When I started going to Strawbridge Elementary School in the 4th grade, you knew I was the new girl and instantly befriended me,' she wrote. 'You found out we lived in the same neighborhood and introduced me to everyone. You would ride your bike to my house and ring my doorbell just to hang out almost every day. You got close to my family and everyone loved you. We shared countless of memories together.

'My heart is so broken. I'm still trying to process the fact you are no longer with us. I can't help but think how we left off on a bad note but you and I both knew we were always there for each other,' she added. 'We could go days, months, even years not talking and somehow always came back around as if we saw each other yesterday.'

Hall's mother, Ceola Hall, told NBC affiliate WDSU that he had flown out to Mexico City on October 29 and last spoke to him that night.

'It's been so hard,' Ceola said. 'We tried calling back over there for the funeral homes. Because of the language barrier and stuff you cannot get anything through or really understand.'

Per Mexican laws, landlords are not required to install carbon monoxide detectors inside homes.

DailyMail.com was unable to confirm if the home that Angélica died in was listed through Airbnb.

'This can't happen again to anyone else,' Andrea said.

In a statement to DailyMail.com, a spokesperson for Airbnb said the apartment listing has been suspended and all future reservations had been canceled as part of the investigation into the tragic incident.

'This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts are with the families and loved ones as they grieve such an unimaginable loss,' the rental company spokesperson said. 'Our priority right now is supporting those impacted as the authorities investigate what happened, and we stand ready to assist with their inquiries however we can.'

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows an average of 430 deaths are registered in the United State each year because of carbon monoxide poisoning.

At least 12 such deaths were reported in vacation rentals in 2019, KGTV reported.
