New York Yankees legend Babe Ruth's baseball glove sold for $1.53 million, shattering the record, at the 19th annual Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory auction.
The glove was originally given by Ruth to St. Louis Browns third baseman Jimmy Austin.
The previous record is believed to be $387,500 a Lou Gehrig glove, which was sold with Sotheby's in 1999.
Meanwhile, in 2013, a Jackie Robinson glove believed to have been used in both the 1955 and 1956 World Series was sold for just over $373,000 by Steiner Sports.
Originally Hunt's Auctions, who handled the sale, believed the glove was a vintage Babe Ruth store model when submitted for consignment.
However, the authentication process unveiled a photo showing Ruth to be wearing the same model of glove with a identical tobacco staining and proved it to be much more.

'This monumental glove is truly [one] of the most historic pieces of its medium to have ever been offered at public auction,' David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, said.
'My childhood memories with my 'Uncle Jim' are extremely dear to me,' Susan Kolokoff, niece of Jimmy Austin, said in a statement from Hunt Auctions.
'The glove had rested in a box for the last 30 years until we learned of its history and heard the amazing audio recording.'

In August, a card of New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle has sold for an astonishing $12.6million, making it the most expensive sports item ever at auction.
The 1952 Mickey Mantle card broke the record for most expensive sports item ever
Mantle was a legend of baseball and played all 18 seasons of his career with the Yankees
It destroyed the previously held record by over $5m, set earlier this month for a T206 Honus Wagner graded SGC 2.
Before Heritage Auctions kicked off the bidding on July 25, it was speculated the Mantle relic could fetch upwards of $10m.
Two weeks before bidding closed, the 9.5-grade 1952 Topps card had already hit $6.35m - $7.62m with Buyer's Premium.
The 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle No. 311 is one of the most legendary baseball cards of all time and is often referred to as the slugger's rookie card, although it is, in fact, not, as it was released the year after he made his debut for the New York Yankees.
