BRAD FRIEDEL: It is not fair AT ALL to ask players about Qatar human rights issues at the World Cup

I don't think it will be hard for the players across the World Cup to put the human rights discussions to the back of their minds as the tournament begins today.

But I think it is incredibly unfair to have the players and staff members as almost spokespeople for this sort of thing in Qatar. In fact, I don't think it is fair at all.

If you were born and raised in the United States you wouldn't know a lot about human rights issues in Qatar.

You might have read about it but unless you actually live in the culture, you don't instantly know about it.

So it is not fair to comment on it and it is not fair to ask a player's view.

We sit here and in our culture we think it is terrible, of course. But for you or I to be asked a question and be a spokesperson it, I know I am not educated enough to comment further than this on it.

As I'm saying this, I think it's awful when I hear things that are going on in the country, but I do not know how the country is run.

What I would say is all these questions should be pointed at and answered by one group: FIFA. All the questions across the board should be asked at FIFA.

'If you knew this was happening in this country, why was it awarded?' They should answer it, not the players. Players have no say whatsoever on where the World Cup is hosted, nor do the staff.

A number of teams will be showing solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community by wearing the rainbow armband, a symbol of inclusivity.

I think that's fantastic. But we understand that, it's our culture, we are raised and educated on it.

This is one thing that, if you are raised in the USA or UK, for example you understand. We will all have friends and know people that are gay or black, for example.

We are not educated on human rights issues and the abuse of. There's a difference.

For the players, once the games start they should be ready to focus on the competition

I think everybody should be kind to everybody. That is our culture. Whenever I was asked to wear rainbow laces, rainbow anything in my playing career, I did it.

In our countries, the way we are brought up, people have a right to live how they want and you should be kind to someone if they are kind to you. That is how we are raised.

Everyone should be treated equally. If there is taking a knee or Kick Racism out of football, we do it, we understand and know about it.
