Boulder police rescued two people Monday night after a suspect armed with AK-47 rifles and explosives took them hostage.

The suspect barricaded himself inside as police tried to negotiate for him to come out of his home, which was said to be booby-trapped. He is now in custody.

An officer fired a shot during the rescue of the two people, but no one was hit, according to police — with the stand-off ending around 1am Tuesday.

The scene was described by the Boulder PD as 'very active' just after 10pm local time Monday night. They asked people to avoid the 3300 block of Broadway, near Iris Avenue. The intersection of Iris Avenue and Broadway remains closed.

The incident began after Boulder Police received information from the neighboring Lafayette police department about a possible hostage situation.

One local resident said they believed the house to have been unoccupied prior to the incident.

Those being held hostage were brought to safety before the suspect then barricaded himself inside the home.

He was reportedly armed with several weapons. Officers evacuated people living nearby while they worked to bring the man safely into custody.
