The United States' victory over Iran won't be forgotten any time soon by Americans both enthralled with soccer and those who are watching for the first time.

Millions tuned in to watch this match - which the United States won 1-0 to take their first victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

With the team advancing to the knockouts, USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter praised his team after the match had ended, encouraging them to shift their focus to survival mode.

After yesterday's victory, Gregg Berhalter and Tyler Adams praised the team's performance

'Real proud of this group, especially towards the end,' Berhalter said to the team in the locker room after the match.


'Right, when we worked, and it wasn't going our way, we had to dig, we had to fight for everything, that's when you guys stepped up. Really good effort, man. Really good effort.

'They worked, they were desperate and we held firm. We wanted to enjoy this, but we're not done. That's the mentality we need to have now that we're happy to be here. we gotta flip the switch and get into competitive mode. [In the] knockout anything can happen, guys it's about survival now, right. And I'll take you guys all day.'

Following his speech, Berhalter gave the match ball to captain Tyler Adams - whose play on the ball and in organizing the team galvanized them to two draws and a victory in three group stage matches. 

'You guys suffered today, it wasn't easy by any means,' Adams said after catching Berhalter's second attempt at a behind-the-back-bounce-pass to get him the ball.

'This could go to a lot of people today, but really proud to be a part of this f***ing team with you guys. I'd go to war with you guys anytime, man.'

A 38' goal from Christian Pulisic was all that was required for the United States as they held Iran to just four shots the entire match.

Meanwhile, the USMNT put up 12 shots - including five on target - and had the advantage in both pass completion and possession.

The United States faces Group A winners the Netherlands this Saturday at 10:00am ET
