The majority of Americans think that Donald Trump's social media post suggesting the U.S. ditch its Constitution is grounds to disqualify him for running for president again in 2024.

A new poll from Quinnipiac University released Wednesday shows that 51 percent of registered voters think Trump should not be able to run for a third term following his comments, while 41 percent think it does not disqualify him to make another bid for the White House.

Nine percent of respondents were unsure how they felt about it.

Earlier in December, Trump posted to his Truth Social account that all usual rules surrounding elections need to be thrown out due to the interference he claims led to his 'fraudulent' loss against Joe Biden in 2020.

The post included a call for the 'termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.'

When criticism ensued, however, the former president insisted that he did not call for the Constitution to be tossed.

'The Fake News is actually trying to convince the American People that I said I wanted to 'terminate' the Constitution,' Trump lamented on Truth Social. 'This is simply more DISINFORMATION & LIES, just like RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA, and all of their other HOAXES & SCAMS.'

'What I said was that when there is 'MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION,' as has been irrefutably proven in the 2020 Presidential Election, steps must be immediately taken to RIGHT THE WRONG.'

When parties were asked, there was a predictable divide between how Republicans see Trump's comments compared to whether Democrats feel it should prevent him from being able to be president again.

Only 17 percent of Republicans say that calling for 'termination' of the Constitution should be a disqualifying factor, while 85 percent of Democrats say it should absolutely preclude the ex-president from running.

Independent voters are more split on the matter, with 52 percent against Trump being able to run after the comments and 38 percent saying it should not. Ten percent say they don't know how they feel about it.

'So, with the revelation of MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION in working closely with Big Tech Companies, the DNC, & the Democrat Party, do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION?' Trump wrote in his highly controversial tweet.

'A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution. Our great 'Founders' did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!'

The Quinnipiac poll, which surveyed 1,456 adults from December 8 through 12, showed Trump's disapproval rating at 59 percent, the highest since 2015, and only 31 percent reported a favorable opinion of the ex-president.

When only Republicans were considered, his approval jumped to 70 percent.

A clear majority of Republicans – 56 percent – still favor Trump as the party's nominee in the 2024 presidential election, while 38 percent are against it.

Despite Trump's dismal showings in the latest poll, the silver lining seems to be a contradiction of some other surveys that show him trailing behind Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in terms of who Republicans want to see as their presidential nominee in 2024.
