Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have claimed their trip to Australia was the 'turning point' for their relationship with the Royal family - as it showed how popular they were and that 'threatened' the Firm.

In the latest episode of their bombshell Netflix series, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke of their trip Down Under in October, 2018 where they were welcomed with open arms.

The couple had 76 engagements during their time in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, all while Meghan was pregnant.

'I think Australia was a real turning point because they were so popular,' their friend Lucy Fraser said in the production's fourth episode.

'So popular with the public, the internals at [Buckingham] Palace were incredibly threatened by that.'

The episode then cut to scenes of both Meghan and Harry being fawned over by Aussie fans.

'The issue is when someone who's marrying in, who should be a supporting act, is then stealing the limelight, or is doing the job better than the person who was born to do this - it upsets people, it shifts the balance,' Harry said.

The episode then looked at Princess Diana's time in Australia where she said fans were desperate to speak to her instead of her husband Prince Charles.

Harry said the moment the 'penny dropped' about Meghan's soaring popularity was when she was splashed across the front page of the UK's Sunday Telegraph newspaper after an event the entire Royal family had attended the night before.

Meghan was the one pictured, not the Queen or Kate.

'She was like "but it's not my fault",' Harry said.

'And I said "I know", and my mum felt the same way.'

The couple said it wasn't long after their trip to Australia that the media coverage of Meghan also turned negative.

She revealed she didn't think anyone had believed what the tabloids were printing about her until a woman in Liverpool scolded her for her relationship with her father.

'I was still under the delusion that if it was in a tabloid, then no one believed it,' the Duchess said.

'Then we had a walkabout in Liverpool and there was a group of women and one of them said to me, "what you're doing to your father is not right".

'And I thought, "oh my god, people actually believe this stuff". And my entire centre was rocked to its core.'
