Musk vowed to step down as head of Twitter if people voted him out in his new poll that he posted on Sunday. And while some critics say he already has a replacement CEO in mind, he has denied these claims.
When the poll closed 12 hours later - 57.5 percent of users said they wanted him out, equating to over 10million users.
In response to the tweet, MIT artificial intelligence researcher Lex Fridman said he would take the CEO job.
'You must like pain a lot,' Musk tweeted. 'One catch: you have to invest your life savings in Twitter and it has been in the fast lane to bankruptcy since May. Still want the job?'
Lex responded: 'Yes. We'll turn it around.'
Another volunteer was rapper Snoop Dogg who posted a poll asking his followers if he should take over. More than 80 percent of the one million people who voted said yes.
Musk tweet again saying:
'No one wants the job who can actually keep Twitter alive. There is no successor,' Musk tweeted. 'The question is not finding a CEO, the question is finding a CEO who can keep Twitter alive.'
It is not clear at this time who will replace him if he does follow through on his threat and step down as boss.
After setting the poll live Musk warned: 'As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it.'
