Firebrand conservative Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has been on the attack against fellow Republicans who are threatening to derail House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy's bid for House Speaker
Georgia GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene fired off a clear warning to her fellow far-right lawmakers on Tuesday over their 'reckless and dangerous' opposition to House GOP Leader McCarthy's bid for the Speakership.
It follows a withering attack against fellow Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado. Boebert and Greene, both elected on a pro-Donald Trump wave in 2020, are similarly known for making outlandish statements and promoting the MAGA wing of the GOP.
But early reports of a brewing rivalry gave way to Greene calling Boebert 'childish' in a direct attack on Twitter Monday.
Greene has, for the most part, stood alone in the conservative House Freedom Caucus with her vocal support for McCarthy.
At least five House Republicans are threatening to derail his quest for the Speaker's gavel. The GOP will have a 222-seat majority next year, meaning McCarthy can only afford to lose four votes to still reach the 218 votes he needs to win.
One of them, Rep. Matt Gaetz, recently told conservative activist Charlie Kirk in regards to McCarthy's fitness for speaker, that he is an 'admirer' of Greene's but 'it's not something we see the same on.'
Boebert, a fellow Freedom Caucus member who was interviewed alongside Gaetz, mocked Greene for previously amplifying conspiracy theories on 'Jewish space lasers' and called for an 'inside conversation' before deciding on the new majority's leader.
'I’ve supported and donated to Lauren Boebert. President Trump has supported and donated to Lauren Boebert. Kevin McCarthy has supported and donated to Lauren Boebert. She just barely came through by 500 votes,' Greene wrote on Twitter Monday evening, citing Boebert's unprecedentedly close re-election race in November.
'Lauren refuses to endorse President Trump, she refuses to support Kevin McCarthy, and she childishly threw me under the bus for a cheap sound bite.'
McCarthy's slim GOP majority next year means he cannot afford to lose even five votes for the top spot in the House of Representatives
Greene called out her 'friends' like Rep. Matt Gaetz for opposing McCarthy, while more directly attacking Republican Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert
She fired off a last tweet accusing Boebert of fomenting 'high school drama.'
Greene has also not shied away from disagreeing with her allies on McCarthy's position, but a lengthy 25-tweet statement posted on Tuesday was her most direct rebuke of them yet.
That includes both Gaetz and Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs, whom Greene has publicly called a 'friend.' Biggs has publicly announced his intention to challenge McCarthy for the speakership, despite soundly losing to him in a similar vote earlier this year.
Greene accused them of 'lying to the base' about a 'plan' as an alternative to the GOP leader and said Republicans are 'ruining everything' by being 'the party of Never.'
'I’m disappointed my friends would mislead the base and that’s a big reason why I’m speaking out,' Greene wrote.
'The Speaker is elected inside our conference that unfortunately for us conservatives is filled with too many moderates and it’s IMPOSSIBLE for a conservative to get 218 votes.'
Boebert and Greene have long been thought to be cut from the same MAGA cloth, but within the House Republican Caucus, their supposed differences have led to reported squabbles
She continued, 'My friends know this and risking the gavel & delaying everything just bc they don’t like someone is not only selfish, it’s incredibly reckless and dangerous.'
Greene compared their resistance to the 'never Trumpers,' apparently in reference to Republicans who rejected and opposed former President Donald Trump.
'Never Trumper’s bad attitudes produced Republican refusal to work together and accomplish the MAGA agenda that Americans rallied around and voted for in record numbers,' the representative wrote.
'Now we have a new Never movement growing, the Never Kevin movement. Just like Never Trump, the Never Kevin’s are Never Kevin because they just don’t like him. It’s not about his policy goals, his public promises as Speaker, or any credible reason at all. It’s just Never.'
Politico reported in April that Boebert and Greene had clashed over the latter's attendance at a rally held by a known white nationalist.
The confrontation apparently had to be de-escalated by a fellow GOP lawmaker.
