Trump claims U.S. border is 'getting worse' less than 48 hours before Title 42 is set to EXPIRE 

Donald Trump sounded off about the state of the U.S.-Mexico border on social media on Monday, less than 48 hours before a controversial expulsion policy from his days as president is set to expire. 

Title 42, which enables border agents to turn asylum-seekers away upon contact in the name of slowing the spread of COVID-19, was set to expire last week but was extended at the 11th hour by an administrative stay from Chief Supreme Court Justice John Roberts.

It's now set to expire by 11:59pm EST on December 27.

'Two years ago we had the strongest and safest Border in U.S. history. Hundreds of miles of Walls were built, my “Stay In Mexico” Policy was working fantastically,' the ex-president began his post. 

'Title 42 was in full force and effect, Border Patrol and ICE were doing an incredible, tough, yet compassionate, job, and our Southern Border was, for the first time in decades, being spoken of in glowing terms.'

'Stay in Mexico' was a Trump-era border policy that was opposed by civil rights and humanitarian groups. It forced migrants and legal asylum-seekers to wait for their U.S. court date in Mexico, which gave rise to squalid and crime-ridden encampments on the southern side of the border.

The Biden administration attempted to end the harsh measure earlier this year but was temporarily blocked by a federal judge earlier this month.

Biden administration officials have repeatedly insisted that the federal government is ready for the end of Title 42, but Republicans and even some Democrats have claimed that President Joe Biden nor his advisers are grasping the full urgency of the situation.

With Title 42's looming end, thousands of migrants have flooded across the border and are now encamped on the streets of El Paso and elsewhere in frigid winter conditions.

State and local officials have sounded alarms about overflowing shelters and thinning resources. 

But some have also taken advantage of the situation to use migrants as political pawns to lambast President Joe Biden's border policies.

Multiple buses full of migrants from Texas arrived near Vice President Kamala Harris' residence on Christmas Eve night. Republican governors including Texas Governor Greg Abbott have been sending such buses to the capital and other blue-leaning cities amid an escalating battle over the country's immigration policies.

More than three million undocumented people have attempted to cross the U.S.-Mexico border under Biden's presidency.

Amid an escalating feud over how to handle the migrant crisis, several busloads of asylum-seekers were sent to Washington, DC and left near Vice President Kamala Harris' residence on Christmas Eve

ABC reported earlier this month that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is preparing for scenarios where as many as 18,000 people cross the border per day after Title 42 is lifted.

DHS sent out a warning to migrants on Saturday that winter temperatures are 'dangerously low' and reminding them that Title 42 is still in effect as of now.

It said the department 'continues to fully enforce our immigration and public health laws at the border.'

'Individuals and families attempting to enter without authorization are being expelled, as required by court order under the Title 42 public health authority, or placed into removal proceedings,' the statement went on.

'As temperatures remain dangerously low all along the border, no one should put their lives in the hands of smugglers, or risk life and limb attempting to cross only to be returned.'
