One person dead and another injured after car plummets onto LIRR tracks Brooklyn's Atlantic station

One person is dead, and another is in critical condition after their black SUV crashed and plummeted 40 feet into Brooklyn's Long Island Railroad train yard. 

The driver, a man in his seventies, reportedly suffered a medical episode when his vehicle flipped over a barrier at the intersection of Atlantic and Vanderbilt Avenues, landing in the train yard.

The horrific accident occurred on Friday afternoon at the start of the holiday weekend. Firefighters and emergency personnel were called to the scene and transported the victims to Brooklyn Methodist hospital.

The male victim was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. The condition of the female passenger remains unclear at this time.

A male eyewitness called 911 after the horrifying scene.

'I heard the impact of the car hitting the fence. I saw debris flying into the air. I saw the tail end of it going down into the pit,' he told DailyMail.com.  

'At that point, I got out of my car and called 911. A few other people were doing that as well. They sent EMT and fire trucks.'
