The FIVE Republican investigations into Biden, his administration and his family

House Republicans will take over the majority on Tuesday, ushering in an era of the Biden administration that will be marked with conflict and relatively little legislative progress compared to the last two years when Democrats held all of Congress and the White House.

After a dramatic vote to elect the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, GOP lawmakers who for months have threatened a slew of oversight and ethics investigations against the Executive Branch will have the opportunity to make good on their threats.

Republican Reps. James Comer and Jim Jordan, who are expected to chair the Oversight and Judiciary committees in the new Congress, held a press conference in November after winning the midterms to announce a sweeping probe into President Joe Biden and his son Hunter's laptop and foreign business deals.

Additionally, House Republicans have signaled that a probe into the origins of COVID-19 would be a top priority, as well as an investigation into the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal.

Separate investigative threats at the Justice Department over perceived 'politicization' and the Department of Homeland Security over the border crisis have spawned inter-party debate over impeachment for Attorney General Merrick Garland and Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Here are the five investigations House Republicans have put on the table for the 118th Congress:

Hunter Biden's business dealings and laptop

'I want to be clear: This is an investigation of Joe Biden, and that's where our focus will be next Congress,' Rep. James Comer said during a Nov. 17 press conference announcing a sweeping investigation into Hunter Biden's finances.

Republicans have accused President Biden of knowingly profiting off of his son's business ventures, and in turn claim Hunter previously leveraged his father's influential stature as then-vice president to further his foreign deals.

The accusations were spurred by emails recovered in 2020 from a laptop hard drive likely belonging to Hunter Biden, which appear to show him offering meetings with his father to foreign and domestic partners among other deal-making discussion.

Hunter Biden has reportedly recruited a new lawyer, who had at different points represented Jared Kushner and Bill Clinton, to help shield him from the incoming onslaught, according to NBC

Republican lawmakers claim to have obtained credible whistleblower testimony to support the accusations.

The president has repeatedly denied any knowledge and participation in his son's business dealings.

COVID-19 pandemic and Dr. Fauci

Republican lawmakers have signaled multiple points of investigative interest related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including origins of the virus and the U.S. government's handling of health policy during the height of the pandemic's severity.

A proposed rules package released late on Sunday night shows the GOP's upcoming session will prioritize a probe into what caused the coronavirus.

A Republican-led report released last month suggests that the possibility that COVID was created in China as a bioweapon and then accidentally leaked into public contact has not been ruled out.

And on November 27, then-Oversight ranking Rep. James Comer told NBC News' Meet The Press that his committee will focus on COVID funding in the new Congress.

He claimed that 'there have been hundreds of billions, if not trillions of dollars wasted over the past three years, so that spans two administrations, in the name of COVID.'

Conservatives are also likely to call upon Dr. Anthony Fauci, who rose to national acclaim and became a polarizing figure during the pandemic, to testify - something he has signaled he will be open to.

Crisis at the southern border

Illegal immigration has long been a cornerstone issue for Republicans, and the first two years of President Biden's term are no different with a record number of people encountered at the southern border under his administration's watch.

Border communities and even cities like New York and Washington, DC have seen their infrastructures strained by the sheer number of undocumented people who in most cases are fleeing unstable situations in Central and South America.

It's even led to some on the right of the GOP conference to call for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas' impeachment - though more moderate Republicans have pumped the breaks on such threats.

A late November letter from Republicans on the House Oversight Committee to Mayorkas read, 'The current state of the southern border is dangerous, chaotic, and inhumane as smugglers continue to profit from the Biden Administration’s self-inflicted crisis.'

'Committee Republicans in the 118th Congress will continue to conduct oversight of the humanitarian and national security catastrophe created by the Biden Administration’s policies,' the lawmakers pledged.

Justice Department and the FBI

Accusations of DOJ and FBI politicization hit a frenzied high over the summer when federal agents raided Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago mansion.

The investigation, stemming from documents that Trump improperly took from the White House at the end of his presidential term, has been a lightening rod for Republican criticism across both the moderate and far-right factions of the GOP.

They accused President Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland of weaponizing the DOJ against a would-be 2024 rival of Biden's.

The FBI has faced added GOP scrutiny over revelations that high-level officials met with social media companies ahead of the 2020 election to flag possible 'misinformation' attempts by malign foreign actors - which Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously disclosed as the reason for his platform's censorship of an October 2020 New York Post story on Hunter Biden's laptop.

A report from Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee from late last year accused the FBI of fostering 'a rampant culture of unaccountability, manipulation, and abuse at the highest level.'

The Biden administration's chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal

Multiple hearings on the U.S. military's withdrawal from Afghanistan have failed to meet Republicans' accountability threshold over the chaotic operation.

Rep. Michael McCaul, who's expected to chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has already signaled that he'll want the panel to dig deeper into the crisis.

Last month, McCaul demanded that parts of the administration including the Treasury and State Departments hand over documents related to the withdrawal.

The probe is expected to examine multiple facets of the withdrawal, including the ISIS-K suicide attack that led to the killings of 13 U.S. service members and 170 Afghans.

It's also expected to look at the thousands of Afghan allies, including Special Immigrant Visa applicants, who were left behind to fend largely for themselves under Taliban rule.

'Why did it go so badly? Why were Americans left behind? Why were Afghan partners we promised to protect, 100,000 of them, left to the Taliban?' McCaul said in an interview with the New Republic.
