Chicago attorney apologizes after calling deputies 'those motherf*****' and using racial slur

A Chicago lawyer was forced to apologize after she called sheriff's deputies 'those motherf******' and used a racial slur in a livestreamed court hearing.

Donna Makowski groveled before Judge Dominique Ross — who is black — at a contempt of court hearing on Friday for her remarks the day earlier telling her: 'I'm shaken and I'm humiliated.'

Makowski was not sentenced to contempt of court, as Ross argued her public humiliation was punishment enough, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

But she could now face discipline by the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, which last year reassigned a judge and ordered him to undergo sensitivity training after he was caught on a hot mic making sexist comments at another livestreamed court hearing.

According to court documents obtained by CBS News, Makowski could be heard in an unmuted conversation while waiting for her client to sign on to a livestreamed court hearing on Thursday saying 'Those motherf****** at the sheriff's office' and 'N****** do it all the time.'

Ross called the comments 'unprofessional, disrespectful and contemptuous,' and scheduled a contempt of court hearing for the next day.

When that hearing began, the Sun-Times reports that Makowski issued her groveling apology, saying, 'Your Honor, I apologize. I have no words for the inexcusable episode that happened yesterday.'

Makowski then went on to insist that the language was not directed at the black judge.

'It was outrageous whether you were directing it to the court or not,' Ross replied. 'I'm sure that you have clients who are people of color.'

At that point, Makowski revealed that her late husband was black, prompting Ross to tell her: 'That does not give anybody a pass to make those types of statements. They're just not proper.

But in the end, Ross decided not to hold Makowski in contempt of court because 'the court cannot teach adults not to make ignorant statements, to make racial slurs, whether they are directed at the court or not.

'There is no punishment that this court can impose upon you that is going to surpass the embarrassment, the humiliation that your colleagues and other judges have heard you make.'

Still, she said: 'Your apology is accepted.'

Since making the remarks, the Facebook page for Makowski's law office has been inundated with comments calling her racist.

One man wrote: 'The next time you’ll [think] long and hard before you open your [mouth],' while a woman commented: 'Welp, there goes your career up in flames. Truth always comes out! Wish this would have been exposed sooner.'
