A New York City public school principal is defending the school's choice to have a sexually explicit book in the library after parents raised concerns.
In an email sent to parents, Booker T. Washington Junior High School principal Elana Elster, 58, said the book will remain in the library to help expose students to 'new and different ideas.'
'This Book is Gay' discusses orgies, kinks, and sex apps, as well as anal and 'girl on girl' sex.
Parents and social media users have expressed outrage over the book's placement in the library, with some calling for the book - and the principal - to be removed.

Booker T. Washington Junior High School principal Elana Elster, 58, said the book will remain in the library to help expose students to 'new and different ideas'
Elster in the email said she and other school officials have 'no plans to remove' the book, despite the backlash.
The principal said the book is part of the public school experience and that the 'children will be continuously exposed' to new and different ideas.
'As a parent, you have every right to monitor what your child is reading,' Elster writes in the email.
The message, which has the subject line 'censoring' continues by stating that what some parents consider inappropriate, others may not.
'Parents have very different ideas on what is appropriate for their children,' she says in the email, which was uploaded to Twitter earlier this week.
The principal, whose school works with students younger than 14, also suggests parents recommend certain books to their children that keep 'with your family values' if they are opposed to other books.
Booker T. Washington Junior High School is hoping to expose students to 'new and different' ideas with the book, according to Elster

'When you say you are "at war everyday," I am wondering if you are referring to the exposure your child is getting to people and ideas that are new and different. This is a public school and the children will be continuously exposed,' Elster writes.
'It doesn't mean that they will have to agree with everything they are learning or seeing. In fact, they will be taught to question, analyze, expand their horizons,' the e-mail continues.
The book, some argue, has larger issues to it than just a difference of viewpoints.
The book goes into vivid detail on certain sexual situations which may be inappropriate to some young readers.

'Let's talk about dildos: I think a lot of people assume that where there is no penis, a desperate sexual void is created, out of which something [bleep] shaped must ultimately slot in order to satisfy,' a passage of the book reads.
'I've only every slept with two women who enjoyed using dildos. I hate wearing a strap-on. I've only every done it once and NEVER AGAIN,' it continues.
It also contains pictures and images depicting the human body and how sex between men and sex between women work, with illustrated and labeled graphs.
In spite of the controversial source material, Elster states the book is not going anywhere.

Despite backlash, some who have read and reviewed the book have called it 'extremely helpful.'
'Easy to read and very helpful for anyone that is part of the lgbtq community or knows someone that is,' wrote one Amazon reviewer.
'I found this book to be informative, funny and well done. I would warn readers that there is one chapter where gay sex is totally explain in a open and frank way. If that is not something for you, maybe a different book would be for you,' said one person.
