Universal Studios set open Mario-themed Toadstool Café in LA featuring mushroom-shaped garlic knots

Universal Studios Hollywood is stepping back into the 1980s with a new Mario-theme café in Los Angeles that features a character-specific menu. 

Toadstool Café, a fast-casual style restaurant, is set to open in February inside the Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios next month and it will transport diners directly into the video game, which came out in 1983. 

Featuring Toadstool's iconic polka-dot mushroom pattern throughout the restaurant, as well as, other well-known items from the Super Mario Bros world, including the green warp pipes and fan-favorite power-up icons - the dining room will have customers wondering how they teleported into their favorite childhood game. 

To enter the café, parkgoers will go through a mushroom and come face-to-face with Chef Toad as he prepares meals inside a virtual kitchen and be led to five roped-off registers to place their order. 

As they enter the magical dining room, they'll be invited into a room full of warm and blonde-toned woods with pops of pastels, the green warp pipes situated on the ceiling, and Candy Land-like booths with stripped cushions and oversized chairs.

The room will have several TV screens framed as windows that allow the 250 diners to watch Todd prepare meals and get views of Mushroom Kingdom. To accompany their experience, Super Mario Brothers music will play in the background, truly immersing customers into the video game. 

Much like its Japan counterpart Kinopio's Café, the colorful menu will feature a  Piranha Plant Caprese salad, which features a tomato slice cut to look like the characters' worst enemy with a piece of asparagus and basil finishing out the shape. It will also feature a Mario burger with bacon, mushrooms, and cheese. 

However, it will also feature more LA-style meals, including a Luigi chicken burger with pesto and a Super Star Chicken Salad. Both burgers will also come with a fun mustached shape printed on the top bun, perfectly aligned with customers' lips and their first bite.   

It will also have mushroom-shape garlic knots dusted with parmesan cheese and parsley, as well as a Chef Toad Short Rib Special. The special may change by season, according to Eater.

It will also feature a special dish, which could change by the season. In February, it will be the Chef Toad Short Rib Special (pictured)

And diners can round out their meals with themed desserts, including the ? Block Tiramisu, designed to look just like the one in the game; a Mt. Beanpole Cake to remind customers they have finished their game and their meal, or a Princess Peach Cupcake that features a crown worthy of any royal. 

And it wouldn't be a theme park restaurant with some sort of collectible, with red and green mushroom-shaped drink sippers available for $20. The restaurant will also serve a Super Star Lemon Squash drink in a non-collectible cup that is made up on a 'honey lemon soda with mango stars and assorted tropical jellies.' 

The menu also features gluten-friendly, vegetarian, and vegan options. Prices range from $6 to $22. 

Jon Corfino, vice president of Universal Creative, told Eater that the theme park used this opportunity to fully immerse customers into the game.

'Universal is known for putting you in an immersive environment, usually from a film, but in this case, we’re actually going into a game,' he said. 'There was really never an option of saying: "We’re just going to serve chicken fingers or pizza." It was always the opportunity to do something special.

'There are gamers, and there are people who kind of understand games, and then there are non-gamers. And the important part is no matter which one of those three categories you fall into, it’s all about immersing you in a magical environment and having a great time.' 

Toadstool Café will open on February 17. Admission to Universal Studios Hollywood is required.
