Golden Globes 2023: Abbott Elementary and House of the Dragon emerge as TV's biggest winners

After a busy show that included everything from a message from Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky to jokes about the Hollywood Foreign Press's race scandal, the 80th annual Golden Globes has come to an end.

ABC comedy Abbott Elementary won big, earning three awards including Best Series - Comedy, while HBO's Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon leaped other series to earn the Best Series-Drama award.

Renowned director Steven Spielberg also took home awards for his film The Fabelmans, based on his childhood, while Colin Farrell's film, the Banshees of Inisherin won for Best Motion Picture -Musical/Comedy.

Other awards were doled out to producer Ryan Murphy, who earned a lifetime achievement award, and Eddie Murphy, who won the coveted Cecil B DeMille award.

Renowned producer Steven Spielberg earned another award on Tuesday night, when his film The Fabelmans took home the Best Motion Picture - Drama.

He had earlier won a Golden Globe for Best Director in a Motion Picture - Drama.

Banshes on Inisherin won big with the award for Best Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy at the 80th annual Golden Globes Tuesday night

It had earlier won for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy, with Colin Farrell taking home the award.

Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon won the Golden Globe for Best Series - Drama on Tuesday night.

'I noticed what everyone did when we did the premiere in LA was that they had a sigh of relief,' the showrunner said in accepting the award. 

He then thanked Game of Thrones for paving the way.

Abbott Elementary, the ABC sitcom about teachers at a Philadelphia-area elementary school, won for Best Series - Comedy/Musical.

Show creator Quinta Brunson said: 'During a really tough time in this country we're glad that Abbott Elementary can make so many people laugh.'

She also pointed out her influences in the audience, including Bob Odenkirk, Henry Winkler and Seth Rogen, who she noted 'is probably high.'

Brunson had earlier won for Best Actress while Tyler James Williams won for Best Supporting Actor.

Kevin Costner won the award for Best Actor for Television Series in a Drama series for his role in Yellowstone.

Regina King had to say he is sheltering in place in Santa Barbara due to the historic storms battering California, as she wished everyone would stay safe.

Iconic comedian Eddie Murphy won the coveted Cecil B DeMille award at the 80th annual Golden Globes Tuesday night.

The award is granted to actors, producers, directors and musicians for 'outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.'

Throughout his career, Murphy has won Emmys and Golden Globes for his various television and movie roles.

He has starred in such films as Coming to America, Shrek and Dr. Doolitle.

'You've been moving through your creative life, and we've all gotten to see you grow as an artist,' Jamie Lee Curtis said as she introduced the legendary comedian.

In his acceptance speech, Murphy joked there are only three things to keep in mind to become successful: 'Do your taxes, pay attention and keep Will Smith's wife's name out of your God d***** mouth.'

She may have skipped the red carpet but Rihanna still ended up being the star of the show at the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards on Tuesday in Beverly Hills.

She was captured giggling beside her beau A$AP Rocky in the audience as she received random acknowledgements from host Jerrod Carmichael and presenters during the ceremony.

The musician-turned-mogul, 34, snagged her first-ever Golden Globe nomination this year for her song Lift Me Up from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack.

Actor Evan Peters won his first Golden Globe on Tuesday night for his portrayal of cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer in the controversial Netflix series Monster: Dahmer, the Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

In accepting his award, Peters said: 'It was a difficult one to make, a difficult one to watch, but I hope some good came out of it.

She reflected on her career, saying for years she only earned small roles in films before getting a supporting role in Legally Blonde and its sequels.

But this is the first time she has portrayed a more serious character, and it earned her her first Golden Globe.

Speaking on the stage Tuesday night, Coolidge joked: 'I had such big dreams as a younger person, but they fizzled. I mean I thought I was going to be the Queen of Monaco, even though someone already did it.'

Austin Butler baffled Golden Globes 2023 viewers on Tuesday by speaking in an Elvis-inspired Memphis drawl as he picked up his first gong for his portrayal of the music icon. 

The Anaheim-born star, 31, was delighted as he scooped the award  for Best Actor - Motion Picture Drama for his work on 2022 film Elvis - but the focus quickly switched to his incredibly different sounding voice. 

As the star began: 'I just want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for this honor' before praising his 'mama', fans clocked that he was still speaking in his Elvis-style Memphis drawl from the film, months after filming had ended.

One fan wrote: 'Austin Butler’s voice is WILD that cannot be real' while a second typed: 'When is Austin Butler going to switch his voice back to normal?'

Cate Blanchett has won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of a high-profile composter in Todd Field's Tár. 

Blanchett beat out Olivia Colemam, Viola Davis, Ana de Armas and Michelle Williams in the Best Actress - Motion Picture Drama category.  

The Australian actress was not present at the awards show to accept the award as she is currently filming a new movie in the UK. 

Steven Spielberg took home a Golden Globe on Tuesday for his film, The Fabelmans, which is based on his childhood and his family.

Speaking of the film, Spielberg said: 'Its not easy to be a kid,

He noted that 'everybody sees me as a success story... but nobody really knows who we are until we can tell people who you are.'

Spielberg said he finally decided during the COVID pandemic it was time to tell his own story, he said.

The Banshees of Inisherin won its second award of the night when it took home the Golden Globe for Best Original Screenplay Tuesday night.

It had previously earned actor Colin Farrell an award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical.

In a historic move, Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky addressed Hollywood directly in a recorded message at the Golden Globes.

He told the audience: 'The war in Ukraine is not over yet, but the tide is turning.

Zelensky then went on to thank Americans for their support during its ongoing struggle against Russian forces, saying: 'It was the free people of the free world who united in our common struggle for democracy.'

And, Zelensky vowed, 'There will be no Third World War. Ukraine wills top Russia.'

The update comes just hours after he announced that the corpses of Russian soldiers are 'covering the ground' of a Ukrainian town where there is 'no life left' amid fierce fighting.

Kevin Costner said he will not be able to attend the 2023 Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles Tuesday, amid storms and flooding in his native Southern California.

The Oscar-winning actor, 67, took to Twitter on Tuesday with a clip in which he explained why he and his wife Christine Baumgartner, 48, would not be able to make it amid the inclement weather.

'Hi everyone - look, I'm so sorry for everyone who might have been tuning in to watch the Golden Globes - Chris and I aren't going to be there,' said the actor, who is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama for his work on the series Yellowstone in the role of John Dutton.

Costner said that he and his spouse 'had to pull the kids out of school in Santa Barbara,' noting that 'this is the second time in five years that the freeway has flooded out, we found ourselves on the wrong side of the town and we couldn't get back last night.'

'Nobody's sadder than us that we can't be there at the Golden Globes,' Costner said. 'Chris had a beautiful dress, I was looking forward to walking down the red carpet with her.' 

The Field of Dreams actor also mentioned his colleagues on Yellowstone in the clip, including the series creator, Taylor Sheridan. 

Billy Porter praised renowned director Ryan Murphy for bringing gay stories to the forefront in the more than 20 years he has been creating.

On Murphy's work, Porter said: 'Our lives, our souls [are] validated and seen.'

And a video montage tells how 'the underdogs and the marginalized' became heroes in his works.

In his acceptance speech, Murphy said: 'Tonight's award made me reflect on what a lifetime achievement really is - and I think you get there by being fearless.'

He then went on to single out other actors who have been proud of being in the LGBT community, as he spoke about the issues he faced growing up in the 1960s as a gay child

'There is a way forward,' he said, adding: 'My mission was to take the unloved and make them the stars.' 

Jennifer Coolidge made a hilarious flub while presenting at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards on Tuesday.

The White Lotus star, 61, was getting ready to present the award in the best supporting actor in a TV musical/comedy or drama category, when she read out: 'So, the Oscar goes to' before quickly realizing her mistake.

'Oh, no, no, wait, Golden Globes,' she corrected herself, before giving the award to Abbott Elementary star Tyler James Williams.

Austin Butler earned a Golden Globe on Tuesday for his portrayal of rock n' roll icon Elvis Presley, just hours after Priscilla Presley said he embodied her late husband to a 'tee.'

He joked when music was being played to rush him off the stage, 'You could have at least played Suspicious Minds or something.'

Butler also said Elvis is a role model and 'I love you so much.'

Elvis is also nominated for Best Film - Drama.

Guillermo del Toro took home the award for Best Animated film, beating out Shrek spin-off Puss in Boots and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.

He said in his acceptance speech that, though it is an animated film, it is geared to everybody.

Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once, in which she plays an interdimensional fighter coming in contact with other versions of herself and her family.

In accepting the award, Yeoh said roles started to dry up when she turned 60 last year, and spoke about the adversity she felt in Hollywood when she first arrived 40 years ago.

'I was given this gift to play this woman who resonates with me and with so many other people because in all the universes she was fighting for her family,' Yeoh said of the role.

She added that the award is for 'everyone who came before me, who looks likes me.'

Jeremy Allen White took home the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in The Bear.

It is the first award for the FX show, which premiered after Emmy awards were announced last year.

Quinta Brunson, the star of Abbott Elementary, took home her first ever Golden Globe on Tuesday night.

In handing her the award, Niecy Nash, said the award 'keeps the black girl magic going.'

Not only is Brunson the star of the show, but she is also the creator who originally pitched the idea of a show around the staff at a Philadelphia elementary school.

India-based musicians Kala Bhairava, M. M. Keeravani, Rahul Sipligunj stunningly beat out other well-known artists for Best Original Song.

Their song 'Naatu Naatu,' from the film RRR, beat out Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick by Lady Gaga, BloodPop, Benjamin Rice and Carolina from Where the Crawdads Sing by Taylor Swift.

The Bollywood song has had people across the world dancing in the streets with its upbeat tunes.

Tyler James Williams earned Abbott Elementary's first award of the night as the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy/Musical.

He said in his speech that black stories need to be told, hoping the award was a sign of that change.

Abbott Elementary has gained a large following since it premiered last year, following the stories of teachers and staff at an elementary school.

Legendary actress Angela Bassett earned Marvel's first Golden Globe award.

She earned the Best Supporting Actress award on Tuesday night for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, in which she plays Queen Ramonda.

Bassett thanked the Marvel team in her speech and spoke about the ongoing legacy of the late Chadwick Boseman.

The first award of the night went to Ke Huy Quan for his role as a supporting actor in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Quan got his start as a child actor in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. But he left the business after finding a lack of roles for Asian actors, only to return as an adult.

He is now the first Vietnam-born actor to win the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and only the second actor of Asian descent to win after Haing S. Ngor

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael delved right into the controversy surrounding the Golden Globes as he began his monologue Tuesday night.

In introducing himself, he told the audience of Hollywood elites: 'I'll tell you why I'm here. I'm here 'cause I'm black.'

He went on to say he was sipping tea when he was asked to become 'black face of an embattled white organization.

'Life really comes at you fast.'

But, ultimately, he said, he decided to 'take the white people money.'

Carmichael refused to say that the Hollywood Foreign Press is racist but noted 'they didn't have a black member' until George Floyd died.

His monologue comes after last year's award ceremony was held in private as the scandal-ridden Hollywood Foreign Press dealt with scandals amid a series of scandals over its lack of diversity, alleged sexual misconduct among its leadership, and accusations of an endemic culture of gifts for gongs.

Kayley Cuoco was snapped giving her boyfriend Tom Pelphrey an intimate kiss on the Golden Globes red carpet Tuesday night as she showed off her baby bump.

The 37-year-old actress wore a light purple dress accentuating her pregnant belly. She is nominated for best actress in a musical or comedy for her role as Cassie Bowden in The Flight Attendant.

Cuoco announced in October that she was expecting a baby girl with the Ozark star.

She and Pelphrey met last spring at the premiere of Ozark.

Priscilla Presley had nothing but good things to say about Austin Butler's performance in Elvis as she said it brought Elvis' legacy to this generation.

Speaking to reporters on the red carpet, Priscilla Presley said Butler had her late husband's voice 'down to a tee.'

Donald Glover announced on the Golden Globes red carpet that he will once again return to his rap career under the name Childish Gambino, NBC News reports.

The actor has not released an album since 2020, but after some prodding by Laverne Cox, announced that he has been back in the studio working on some new music.

'Soon something will happen,' he said. 'I promise something will happen.'

It was an Orange is the New Black reunion on the red carpet Tuesday night, when Laverne Cox met up with Natasha Lyonne.

The two lamented that they haven't seen each other in a while, as Lyonne suggested Cox guest star in her upcoming Peacock show Poker Face.

Cox also said Lyonne looked very rain-proof in her all black Givenchy dress with rings over her gloves.

SNL alum Abby Elliott glowed on the red carpet on Tuesday as she showed off her baby bump for the first time.

Elliott, who stars in FX's The Bear, announced last week that she was expecting her second child with husband Bill Kennedy in an Instagram post.

She said at the time she is expecting a boy after previously having a baby girl with Kennedy.

Elliott had previously been open about her struggles with infidelity.

Curtis is the odds favorite to win Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Meanwhile, Abbott Elementary star Sheryl Lee Ralph made her entrance known in an eye-catching purple gown, and Babylon actress Li Jun Li wore a charming strapless sequin gown.

Some celebrities were making a less-than-stylish sartorial mark as they gathered on the red carpet Tuesday night, with several of the earliest arrivals falling prey to the ultimate fashion faux pas. 

Among them was influencer Tefi Pessoa, who dared to bare - a little too much - in a very risque suspender-style black gown that featured just a thin strap of material over her nipples, while the red of her upper torso was left almost entirely uncovered, save for the thinnest whisp of sheer fabric. 

Among the movies up for Best Drama are Avatar: Way of Water and The Fabelmans, both of which are favored to win a number of awards at this year's show.

Fan favorites Everything Everywhere All at Once are also nominated for Best Musical/Comedy, while Selena Gomez's show with Martin Short, Only Murders in the Building and Netflix hit Wednesday are nominated for Best Musical/Comedy series.

As for the Best Drama series, highly-rated shows like Better Call Saul, The Crown and Severance are expected to face off.

This year's awards ceremony might look a bit different. It's the first year since 1963 that the Golden Globes will be without its 'ambassadors' - the sons and daughters of A-listers who for 60 years have ushered award winners onto and off stage during the event.

Since 1963, celebrity offspring have enjoyed a moment in the spotlight at the Globes, serving almost as prom queens (and kings), while gaining a big publicity boost into the bargain.

Lots of famous names have served as ambassadors. The 1975 Miss Golden Globe was Melanie Griffith (daughter of Tippi Hedren); and her daughter Dakota Johnson played the same part in 2006.

Laura Dern (daughter of Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd) took the role in 1986; and Rumer Willis (daughter of Bruce WIllis and Demi Moore) in 2009.

Sistine, Scarlet and Sophia Stallone — daughters of Sylvester — served in 2017.

But this year, a close source confirmed that the tradition has been ditched, even though the ceremony is back again after Covid. 'It won't happen this year,' the source said.

As DailyMail.com's Allison Boshoff reports, no reason has been officially given, but after a complete overhaul of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association which votes for the awards, focusing on improving diversity, transparency and fairness in the organisation and the event, it's easy to see that this jobs-for-the-kids tradition no longer feels like a happy fit.

Laverne Cox kicked off the awards show's red carpet on a rainy Tuesday in Beverly Hills at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The actress looked incredible in a figure hugging blue and gold gown with curled tresses, exuding old Hollywood glamour.

The ceremony is being held once again at The Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills following a one year break from screens amid controversy over ethical lapses and a lack of diversity. 

Now the embattled Hollywood Foreign Press Association - which puts on the Globes - is seeking a primetime comeback.

The show, which is being hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael, airs on NBC and Peacock, and is presented by the Hollywood Press Association and Dick Clark productions. 

The red carpet for the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards is back following the show's one year break from screens amid controversy for lack of diversity and ethical lapses.

The live broadcast for this year's show kicks off at 8pm ET/5pm PT, and will air live on NBC. 

The star-studded ceremony will take place at iconic The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California where it has been held since 1961.
