Recently retired all-pro tight end Rob Gronkowski admitted to nearly returning to the NFL after saying he had talks with the Buffalo Bills about playing for them this year.
Previously Gronowski had admitted to speaking with several teams about returning to the field, but until now the only known team was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who he most recently played for.
But the 33-year-old has now confessed that AFC contenders the Bills were also among those to hold discussions with him.
Rob Gronkowski has said he talked with the Buffalo Bills about coming out of retirement
Buffalo is currently set for a NFL divisional round playoff matchup against Kansas City Chiefs
'I was actually in talks with the Buffalo Bills a little bit,' Gronkowski said on the New Heights podcast. 'They wanted me to come up there.'
'It just wasn't there, though. If my mindset was there, I would probably most likely be in Buffalo right now playing with the Bills.'
Gronkowski also revealed that he opened up his mind to considering a team besides Tampa Bay after learning that Tom Brady had initially planned to retire at the start of the offseason before the QB changed his mind.
'I'm kind of a Buffalo Bills fan now, again,' Gronkowski said 'Now that I'm not playing no more I'm like, "dang." And I thought about it, how cool that would be to play for the Buffalo Bills.'
In his last season Gronkowski won a Super Bowl trophy with Tom Brady and the Buccaneers
Gronk and Brady also won championships together in New England before playing in Tampa
'I actually thought about it when Tom [Brady] retired this year I was like, "Alright," I didn't really feel like playing football after this year and I was like, "Ahh, Tom retired." I was like, "I'm gonna check out some other teams."
Gronkowski, who retired for the second time in June, sparked social media interest Wednesday by tweeting three words: 'I'm kinda bored.'
Before the tweet Gronkowski had seemed to be enjoying his life in retirement making appearances at many celebrity events.
While appearing on Fanduel's 'Up & Adams' show Gronkowski said: ' I can tell you this. One of the teams that wanted me to come back. Sent me a picture of me in a uniform wearing no. 69.'
Gronkowski told Fanduel TV that multiple teams had reached out to him about unretiring
'And told me that I could be number 69. This was two days ago. If I come back, I could be number 69. And check in eligible every play, where the official would have to go over the microphone every play and say, '69 is eligible' every single play.'
Gronkowski is from up Amherst, New York which is just outside of Buffalo but it is unclear if the Bills were the team that tried to use an image of him in a no. 69 jersey to convince him to unretire.
A four-time Super Bowl champion and five-time Pro Bowl selection, Gronkowski caught 621 passes for 9,286 yards and 92 touchdowns in 143 games for the New England Patriots (2010-18) and Bucs (2020-21). He sat out the 2019 season in his first retirement.
