American expat Katie Payne says living in Melbourne has turned her into a 'snob'

An American expat who moved to Australia claims living in Melbourne has turned her into a 'snob', saying the city's excellent dining culture has left her finding other places sub-par. 

Katie Payne left Iowa in the Midwestern United States in August 2019 for a four-month stint in Newcastle, north of Sydney, but she enjoyed her time so much that she returned. 

Now having lived Down Under for a while she finally understands what makes Melbourne different to other cities around the world.

'I've narrowed it down to pretty much one thing that makes Melbourne so cool, and it's food and drink culture,' Katie said in her latest TikTok video.

In her latest TikTok video, she claims Melbourne has turned her into a 'snob' and explained why the city is better than others 

Katie started thinking about why Melbourne differs to other cities after having a conversation with her mum.  

'Maybe it's because I'm from a really small town where American bar food is all there is and I can only handle so much potatoes and gravy and fried sh*t,' she said.

'The quality of the food [in Melbourne] is superb, your fruit and vegetables are out of this world. I cannot describe how good your cocktails are either!' 

'Cafes and restaurants really take is seriously and everyone in Melbourne loves good coffee.'

Katie then hesitated and realised how Melbourne has changed her.  

'Actually what I love about it is that you've turned me into a snob. So that's the answer.'

'The quality of the food [in Melbourne] is superb, your fruit and vegetables are out of this world. I cannot describe how good your cocktails are either! Cafes and restaurants really take is seriously and everyone in Melbourne loves good coffee,' Katie said in the clip

The video has since been viewed more than 35,000 times with many agreeing with Katie.

'Yeah… Melbourne will do that,' one person wrote, another said: 'Yes I'm an absolute food and coffee snob too.'

'Once you go Melbourne you don't go back,' another added. 

Others admitted they've craved fresh Australian produce while visiting the US.
