NFL Pro Bowl: Snoop Dogg and Pete Davidson named as captains

With the NFL stepping away from a traditional Pro Bowl contest, it is only right the captain picks follow suit, with Snoop Dogg and Pete Davidson both getting the nod.

Peyton Manning, who is coaching the AFC's Pro Bowl picks, will have Snoop Dogg to lean on while his brother Eli will have Davidson helping with the NFC squad.

The league announced in September that it would scrap the annual full-contact game that began in 1951, and Pro Bowl players will instead square off in Las Vegas on February 2 and February 5 competing in dodgeball, a longest drive competition, and a variety of football skills events.

There will also be three seven-on-seven flag football games.

'I'm comin' back to the NFL field, but this time, instead of performing, I'm going head-to-head with Pete and competing for the title of The Pro Bowl Games Champion,' Snoop Dogg, who performed at last year's halftime show, told PEOPLE.

'The competition is going to go off, but we all know that Peyton and our AFC squad are gonna do some big things. We'll end up on that podium.'

Davidson simply said he was doing it, 'to impress' his uncle Mike.

The NFL has traditionally struggled to create a competitive atmosphere around the Pro Bowl as players avoid going full speed to avoid costly off-season injuries.

Taking place just before the Super Bowl, player involvement is subject to change for anyone who makes the biggest game of the season.

As it stands today Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Tyreek Hill, Josh Allen, Davante Adams and Travis Kelce are among the stars on the AFC roster.

On the other side, Eli Manning and Davidson have the luxury of calling on star names like Jalen Hurts, Geno Smith, Kirk Cousins, A.J. Brown and Jason Kelce.

Many of the events at the 2023 Pro Bowl Games Skills Competitions will take place at the Las Vegas Raiders' headquarters and practice facility, as well as Allegiant Stadium.

During the February 2 competition at the practice facility, players will play dodgeball in four teams of five players, compete for the longest drive off a tee, and have a 'best catch' competition, while quarterbacks go head-to-head in a precision-passing drill.

Then on February 5, kickers and punters will square off in in the self-explanatory 'Kick Tac Toe,' while other players will battle in 'Move the Chains,' a tug-of-war style game aimed at lifting a weighted wall using first-down chains.

There will also be an event called the 'Gridiron Gauntlet,' which is a relay race involving several varying stages.

There will be cumulative scoring for both the AFC and NFC teams, which will receive three points for each event won.

Don't be fooled into thinking players no longer care about Pro Bowl selections, though - far from it.

Washington Commanders safety Jeremy Reaves broke down in tears after being told by head coach Ron Rivera he had been selected for the Pro Bowl.

Reaves, who was undrafted in 2018 before signing with the Eagles as a free agent, was one of four members of Washington's roster to earn a spot at the game.

In an emotional clip shared to the Commanders' social media pages, coach Rivera can be seen breaking the news to wide receiver Terry McLaurin, defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, and punter Tress Way before calling Reaves into the locker room.

'Congratulations,' Rivera began telling Reaves. 'You're the Pro Bowl special teams guy. You're the starter.'

Reaves was left speechless as he broke down into tears, before Rivera clapped him on the back and insisted: 'You've earned it young man. Everything you've done.'

'And I know, your mom would be proud,' the coach added before brining his safety in for a hug.
