Oscars 2023 nominations RECAP: Everything Everywhere All at Once leads nominations

Michelle Yeoh has made history as the first Asian nominated in the Best Actress category at the Academy Awards.

The news comes just weeks after the Last Christmas actress, 60, became the first Malaysian to win a Golden Globe.

'I think what it means to me is all those Asians out there go, 'You see, it's possible. If she can do it, I can freaking well do it as well.' That is the most important thing,' she told Deadline following the news.

Angela Bassett was up bright and early and reporting for duty on the set of 9-1-1 on Tuesday, in spite of receiving a history-making Oscar nomination.

The versatile star, 64, who plays police sergeant Athena Grant in the police procedural, got a nod for best supporting actress for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

She is the first Marvel star to be so honored for their role in a Marvel film.

Austin Butler has said he wishes Lisa Marie Presley was 'here to celebrate' after the film based on the life of her legendary father Elvis received eight Oscar nominations.

Butler, 31, who was nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal of The King, remembered Lisa Marie following her tragic passing at age 54 as he spoke with The Hollywood Reporter shortly after the nominations were announced.

'[This role] seemed as though it was this impossible mountain to climb in front of me,' he told THR. 'There were so many pitfalls and so I just was focusing on one step at a time.

'And really the thing for me was just honoring the life of this man and his family. And that’s why those moments when Lisa Marie and Priscilla [Presley] got to see the film and then I first saw them after… nothing I would do would ever top that. And especially with Lisa Marie not being here with us. I just wish she was here to celebrate today with us.'

Tom Cruise was spotted in London just before it was announced his epic action film Top Gun: Maverick had received six Oscar nominations, including the coveted best picture nod.

The actor, 60, who plays an expert pilot in the Top Gun films, was spotted landing his helicopter in the metropolis late on Tuesday.

While Top Gun: Maverick failed to receive any acting nominations, it did receive the nominations for best adapted screenplay, visual effects, best sound, best original song, and best film editing.

The historic nod made her the first woman, the first person of color and the first Marvel Studios actor to be nominated for an Oscar for their performance in a comic book adaptation.

At 64, she is the second oldest black woman to be nominated for an acting Oscar, following Ruby Dee, who was nominated for her role in 2007's American Gangster at the age of 84.

Michelle Yeoh has said 'this is beyond me' as Everything Everywhere All at Once leads Oscar nominations.

The actress, 60, said she feels audiences can relate to the 'loving, beating heart' of the hit movie.

She told The Hollywood Reporter: 'We are a little movie that has such a great, loving, beating heart that so many people relate to.

'And I think that is the reason why we are here today with all these nominations, because we’re just getting an outpouring of love — it’s been such a healing process.

'Not just in the movie, but [for] our audience as well, as they walk through the journey with this crazy woman called Evelyn Wong.

'I’ve been in the movie business now for 40 years. When you have validation from your peers, all that is like the cherry on the cake.

'But the reason why you do films and you present your babies out to the world is because you want the story to be told, you want the people to understand, whether it’s your culture, whether it’s certain very poignant stories, or important tales, to be told.

'I think this is beyond just me. It represents so many who have hoped to be seen in this way, to have a seat at the table, to say, ‘I am of value too, I need to be seen too.'

Viewers have switched off from the Oscars en masse over the last 20 years amid accusations gongs went to films that no one had ever heard of.

Figures plummeted to just 16million last year, a startling drop of the record 56million that tuned in during the 1998 show.

During the COVID pandemic in 2021 the awards ceremony plunged to an audience of just over 10million, despite many people being locked up in their homes.

Last year's show saw a bump up to 16million as it was surrounded by controversy over Will Smith slapping Chris Rock on stage, before receiving an award.

Viewership for live television events, with the exception of NFL football games, has been declining for several years with the advent of streaming and cord-cutting.

When awards season kicked off at the Golden Globes earlier this month and continued with the Critics Choice Awards weeks later, many actors and actresses who have had impressive, long-lasting careers, but hadn't won any official honors for their work were finally recognized - leaving many to wonder, will the 'comeback kids' continue to dominate at the Oscars?

The 64-year-old actress was shocked when her name was called for her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

The thespian, 40, who previously starred as Alfred 'Paper Boi' Miles in Atlanta, was put forward for his role as James Aucoin in the drama movie Causeway.

He stars alongside Jennifer Lawrence as a grieving mechanic from New Orleans who befriends her character, a former soldier.

He told the LA Times in December: 'I liked the stillness of him. I liked the presence he exuded by trying to hide from his grief.

'You know he knows everybody, but there’s still this loneliness to him, this yearning to be seen for who he really is, to make a connection beyond the grief.

'That was reflective especially at that time of where I was in my life. In 2016, I lost my mother and that was going in tandem with my career rising. And it was really hard.'

Rihanna has received her very first Oscar nomination in her long, Grammy-winning career.

On Tuesday it was announced she was recognized in the Best Original Song category for her tune Lift Me Up from the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The song is Rihanna’s first original composition in years, and the singer shares songwriting credit with director Ryan Coogler, Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson and Nigerian singer Tems. 

Brendan Fraser's friend Sarah Michelle Gellar was emotional as he earned a Best Actor nod when Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday.

The 45-year-old actress took to her Instagram Story to record the television as the names in the highly-coveted acting category were announced.

The British and Irish stars who have received a nod ahead of the 95th Academy Awards which will air later this year have been unveiled.

Colin Farrell, Paul Mescal, Bill Nighy and Andrea Riseborough all received a nomination in the Best Actor and Actress categories during the live nominations.

The nominations were announced by Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams ahead of the 95th Academy Awards, which will take place on March 12.

Andrea is a late addition to the Best Actress category for her performance in To Leslie, with buzz surrounding her role growing over the past two weeks.

Several stars were left off the list on Tuesday. Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie were not recognized for their work in the epic Hollywood movie Babylon. And the film did not get into the coveted Best Picture category.

Taylor Swift did not get a nod for her song Carolina from Where the Crawdads Sing. And two films - The Woman King and Nope - did not get any nods.

RRR did not get a lot of attention except for Best Original Song. James Cameron was snubbed for directing Avatar: The Way of Water. 

Paul Dano did not get a nomination for his acting in The Fabelmans and Danielle Deadwyler was left off the list for Till.

Top Gun: Maverick has been nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture, in a sign that Hollywood is finally listening to audiences and honoring box office hits instead of arthouse favorites.

The movie starring Tom Cruise is nominated for Best Picture along with Elvis, Avatar: The Way of Water, All Quiet on the Western Front and The Fabelmans at the 95th Academy Awards, which will be hosted on March 12 by Jimmy Kimmel. 

While Cruise missed out on a nomination for Best Actor, the nomination for Best Picture could bring him his first Academy Award.

It will battle it out with All Quiet on the Western Front, Top Gun, Living and Woman Talking for the award in March.

A viral video shows the Oscar winner, 53, staring at the ground as if completely frozen as her co-star Nina Hoss speaks to a Digital Spy reporter about the film. 

Blanchett didn't blink once as she sat with her arms and legs crossed while listening to Hoss talk for a full 15 seconds.

The Oscars are being streamed live on the awards ceremony's website on Tuesday morning from 8.30am.

Will Smith is getting back to work, nearly a year after his infamous Oscar slap, which Eddie Murphy recently poked fun of at the Golden Globes.

The 54-year-old actor will reportedly return to portray the Genie in a sequel to Disney's 2019 live-action adaptation of Aladdin, according to the Sun.

While Smith won his first Oscar for King Richard just minutes after the slap, his career has been at a standstill.

He resigned from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and he is banned from the Oscars for the next 10 years.

In the Best Actor category, Austin Butler is all but guaranteed to be in the running for his lead role in the biopic Elvis, having already taken home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama.

Likewise, Colin Farrell is a top contender for his performance in The Banshees Of Inisherin, which saw him win a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.

Brendan Fraser's performance as a reclusive college professor struggling with obesity in The Whale has received universal praise as has Bill Nighy's turn as a bureaucrat facing an illness in Living is another name in the mix.

Adam Sandler's performance in Hustle, Paul Mescal's in Aftersun and Hugh Jackman in The Son are also thought to be contenders.

In the Best Actress category, Cate Blanchett's role as a world famous composer in TAR is thought to be a frontrunner.

Joining her could be Golden Globe winner Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All At Once and Viola Davis for her role in The Woman King.

Danielle Deadwyler's role as Emmet Till's mother in Till has received universal praise while Ana de Armas' turn as Marilyn Monroe in Blonde is also thought to be in the running.

Other names mentioned for the nomination include Margot Robbie for Babylon and Emma Thompson for Good Luck To You, Leo Grande.

Actors Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams are set to announce the Oscars nominations for 2023 on Tuesday morning.

The pair will finally put viewers out of their misery and reveal which films caught the judges' eyes around 8.30am ET.

They will likely put on the usual jokes and surprises for audiences across the US before reeling off the list of leading movies.

The 2023 Oscars are on Monday, March 12 2023. US viewers can watch the show on ABC while fans in the UK can also livestream the ceremony on the sub channel Sky Cinema Oscars. 

The ceremony will once again take place at the Dolby Theatre in LA after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences signed a 20-year extension to its hosting deal, meaning the show will take place there until at least 2033.
