Yellowstone prequel series 1923 starring Harrison Ford is renewed for a second season at Paramount+

1923, the series that tells the origin story of Yellowstone's Dutton family, has been renewed for a second season at Paramount+.

Legendary stars Harrison Ford, 80, and Helen Mirren, 77, play Jacob and Cara on the Taylor Sheridan show.

The project takes place at a time 'when pandemics, historic drought, and the end of Prohibition all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home,' notes Paramount+.

The news of a renewal comes just weeks after the December 2022 premiere episode of the first season.

At the time, the show made headlines for debuting with 7.4 million viewers, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The premiere episode - which featured Helen's Cara Dutton killing a trespasser and more - had four broadcast cable airings, three on Paramount Network and one on CMT.

After its success, Tanya Giles, Chief Programming Officer at Paramount Streaming, said: 'Anchored by Taylor Sheridan’s incredible vision and the performances of legends Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, we felt confident this next chapter of the Dutton Family origin story would resonate with audiences.'

'We are thrilled with the record-breaking early response to the first episode and can’t wait to introduce more audiences to this incredible journey of perseverance, heartbreak and adventure set amongst the backdrop of the Mountain West,' she added.

1923 features Ford in his first major television role, portraying Jacob Dutton alongside Oscar-winning Mirren as his wife Cara Dutton. 

The cast also includes Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, James Badge Dale, Marley Shelton, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, and Jerome Flynn. 

1923 is the second Yellowstone prequel series, following last year's 1883 starring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as James and Margaret Dutton.

Sheridan also has another present-day spin-off entitled 6666, set on the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas, and expected to debut in 2023.

Yellowstone debuted its fifth season in mid-November, debuting to 10.3 million viewers across Paramount Network, CMT, TV Land and Pop.

Last year Harrison told THR how he was introduced to 1923: 'I had met with Taylor, who gave me a very brief outline of what he had in mind, and I went on faith and my experience with Yellowstone, 1883.' 

He gushed about the director, 'He’s produced a work of incredible ambition, scale, scope [and] cinematic ambition. Taylor thinks of each of these episodes as a one-hour movie. And that’s the product that we’re getting.'

Weeks before the announcement of a second season, the iconic actor said he'd hope to continue with the show.

'I have been very satisfied and encouraged and challenged by the work at hand. We have another season, I hope, to get to know this character and see him in different circumstances. But I’m having a great time. I’m really enjoying it,' he said last December.
