President Joe Biden got off to a rough start in his State of the Union address on Tuesday night by opening with a fumbled joke and a gaffe.

Biden called Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer the 'minority leader' - when he is in the majority - after stumbling over first lady Jill going to the Super Bowl next week.

'I may need a court order,' Biden quipped to Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. 'She gets to go to the game … next week,' Biden continued, referring to Jill.

'I have to stay home,' Biden said to some laughs: 'Gotta work something out here.'

'And congratulations to Chuck Schumer,' Biden said. 'Another, uh you know, another term as Senate minority leader.'

Biden then paused and corrected himself.

'You know, I think you uh... only this time you have a slightly bigger majority, Mr. Leader. You're a majority leader, about that much bigger?'

Schumer responded by raising up one finger, indicating the Democrats had extended their majority by one to 51 seats after the midterm elections.

The mistake was jumped on by former President Donald Trump who said: 'Big stumble on Schumer. He called him Minority Leader. Can’t do that! Each time he’s going off script, he’s making a mistake. Hopefully he will improve!

In a play-by-play of the speech on his Truth Social app, Trump added Biden was having a 'hard time getting the words out, even though the Fake News will credit him with one of the Great Speeches of all time.

'I really want to see him improve. Come one Joe, you can do it!'

The rest of Biden's speech was dominated by Republicans heckling him for claiming the GOP want to get rid of Medicare and Social Security.

Another Republican said 'it's your fault' when Biden condemned the increase in drug overdose deaths because of fentanyl flooding across the border.

He also declared war on the richest Americans by calling for a minimum billionaire's tax, attacked oil executives and again called for a ban on assault weapons.

The president started of his speech by telling Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy he was 'looking forward to working with him'.

He also said that COVID 'no longer' dominated American lives and waited almost an hour to mention the Chinese spy balloon that flew across the United States.
