Biden says the public's 'not going to pay attention' to Hunter probes

President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he didn't believe the House GOP's probe into his son Hunter and brother James' foreign business dealings would have an impact on his presidency.

'The public's not going to pay attention to that. They want these guys to do something,' Biden said. 'It's not going to go very far.'

The president sat down for a wide-ranging post-State of the Union interview with PBS NewsHour's Judy Woodruff, which included the admission that he hadn't made a final decision to run in 2024.

'I haven't made my decision, that's my intention, but I have not made that decision firmly yet,' he said.

One hiccup is House Oversight Chair James Comer's pledge to look into 'Biden family influence-peddling,' often referencing the dealings with China and Ukraine in the same breath as classified documents being found in Biden's old D.C. office and his Wilmington home.

'They've informed me not to speak of this issue, to anyway prejudice the investigations going on,' Biden answered when asked about the document debacle by Woodruff.

Biden said he voluntarily invited investigators to comb through his documents.

'To the best of my knowledge, the kinds of things they picked up were things from 1974, stray papers. There may be something else I don't know,' he continued.

He admitted, however, that 'what was not done well' was the packing up of his office when he left the vice presidency.

'They didn't do the kind of job that should have been done to go thoroughly through every piece of literature that was there,' the president said.

Woodruff kicked off the interview - conducted after Biden spoke at a union training facility in Madison, Wisconsin - by getting his take on some of the jeers he received during Tuesday night's State of the Union address.

'From the folks that did it I was,' he said when asked if he was expecting to be called a 'liar' by some members of the House GOP, notably Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

'The vast majority of the Republicans weren't that way,' he continued. 'But there's still a significant element of what I call the "MAGA Republicans" - the Make America Great Again Republicans.'

He added that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy 'was gracious.'

Referencing his decades spent as a U.S. senator Biden also noted: 'I always feel comfortable when I'm up on the Hill. For real.'

'Did it most of my life,' he said. 'Wasn't too bad at it either.'

Biden also talked to Woodruff about the state of American politics, noting it's gotten nasty.

'It's gotten too mean, it's gotten too personal, too divisive - and I think one of the messages they sent the last election was come on, work together, get something done for us.'

He placed some of the blame on former President Donald Trump, though didn't use his name.

'There was a deliberate effort by the last guy to play on people's fears and appeal to base instincts,' Biden said.

'And it's not who we are. But people are ... I also noticed a noticed a fair amount of Republicans stand up last night,' he added, bringing the conversation back to his State of the Union performance, which many Democrats praised.
