Erykah Badu opens the doors to her 'sacred' (and very quirky) home studio

Erykah Badu has opened the doors of her magical home studio in Dallas, Texas, where she keeps her most beloved amulets and talismans, including a vintage piano that she believes is haunted. 

The neo-soul singer, who covers the March issue of Vogue, gave the magazine a tour of the 'sacred space' that she has dubbed her 'Badudio.' Located a few minutes away from her family home, the property is more than just a recording studio.

The two-floor residence boasts a zen living area, a bedroom with an infrared sauna, and a meditation room filled with red-patterned cushions on the floor and sound instruments. 

'I've been in the Badudio for almost a year. Our house is around the corner, and I decided to move the studio out of the family house to at least give us some sacred space. Of course, it's full of music,' Badu, 51, told Vogue.   

The Grammy-winning artist has three children with her former partners. She has a son, Seven, 25, with rapper André 3000; a daughter Puma, 18, with rapper The D.O.C.; and a daughter Mars, 14, with hip-hop producer Jay Electronica.

Badu has had the studio, which she has dubbed her 'Badudio,' for almost a year now. It is located just a few minutes away from her home 

Her home studio is a place for her to retreat and make music while surrounded by the objects that inspire her. 

There are African masks on the walls, Malian brass busts topped with sticks of burning incense, and Buddha statues that line the staircase.

The living room seating is arranged around the fireplace, and at the hearth, she keeps bottles of Hennessy and Jameson, matches, a copy of 'The Four Agreements' by Don Miguel Ruiz, and other art pieces and tchotchkes. 

'When you have a sacred space, everything in it is also sacred. Everything you do in it is also sacred. The whole house is an altar paying homage to creativity, and my blessings, and gifts,' she explained. 

Badu shared that one of the most sacred things in her studio is her vintage Rhodes 73 piano, which was given to her by a close friend and seems to have a mind of its own. 

'When I first got it, it would just pop on by itself,' she recalled. 

'I am almost sure that it's haunted. I've written some hauntingly crazy songs on it. I'm an OK keyboard player, but when I play this one...Liberace.'

The singer-songwriter has a number of musical objects in her studio, but one of her favorites is a custom singing bowl that is also a clutch.

'I have singing bowls that I use, and they're good for meditation and stress and those kinds of things. But this one is a purse. Isn't that cute?' she asked while holding it up to the camera. 

The metal clutch, which is from her friend's brand 'Please Look at My A**,' comes with its own wooden mallet inside to strike the bowl. 

'So wherever I am, I can find some peace,' she said after demonstrating how it works.

Badu then moved upstairs to the bedroom featuring a small bed topped with a white comforter and flanked by side tables with funky lamps. 

The artist explained that she doesn't like to have a lot of things in her sleep area, but she has to have her ankle bracelets with bells.  

'As soon as I wake up in the morning, I put these on,' she said. 'I love things that make music, especially when you walk or dance, and I can also use them when I'm recording.'

'Infrared light on the light spectrum is very healing to the cells. My self-care regimen is very important to me, and I really enjoy sweating and bathing and showering and those types of things that give attention to the biggest organ on the body, the skin,' she said, rubbing her arms.

Inside the sauna, she has an old car radio with a CD player that she admitted she stole back in 1983. 'I don't steal anymore,' she noted. 

Badu stressed that when the sauna light is on, she isn't to be bothered because she is meditating, saying, 'That keeps me off your a**. Trust me.'

The 'Tyrone' singer also showed off the custom grills, starting with the gold one that was in her mouth. 

'I'm from Dallas, Texas, South Dallas, Texas, to be exact. The home of people that actually get real gold teeth put in their mouth,' she said. 'I designed this grill — and it's a tuning fork, controlling the frequency of the environment.'

Badu's other grill is made from her favorite stone, opal, and she demonstrated how the crystal mouthpiece glows under a black light.

When she pulled out her spinning sphere, she noted that it is in the key of F - 'the frequency of the universe

The last instrument she opened up about was the om wand that was gifted to her at her third ayahuasca ceremony, saying it's good for sexual and creative energy 

She ended the tour in her meditation room, which has tuning forks and other musical objects for sonic meditation.  

'I've been using sound instruments on my albums since 1997. There's always a bed of delta waves or zeta waves or beta waves underneath the music,' she explained. 'One of my favorite instruments or tools I like to use are tuning forks.'

Badu pulled out a massive double-ended tuning fork that was specially crafted to have delta waves on one side and beta on the other. 

She then grabbed her spinning sphere, noting that it is in the key of F — 'the frequency of the universe.' 

The last instrument she opened up about was the om wand that was gifted to her at her third ayahuasca ceremony.

Badu noted that the instrument's low frequency is 'good for the lower chakras,' including sexual energy, creative energy, and tribal energy.

Right before the film crew left her home, she shared how she would be spending the rest of the evening.  

'I'm gonna go outside and look at the stars since it's such a really clear night here in Texas,' she told the camera.
