Two-time Super Bowl champion backup quarterback Chad Henne has announced his retirement just hours after his Kansas City Chiefs team defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.

Henne has decided to end his career on a high note after twelve seasons in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars

The former Michigan Wolverines quarterback announced his decision via Instagram in what might be one of the more subtle and blunt ways for an athlete to reveal he isn't going to be playing anymore.

'Calling it a career. Capping it off with @budlight and another ring! #superbowlchamps #chiefs,' was all Henne's post read.

The Chiefs thanked him in a comment on that post, saying, 'Congratulations on an incredible career. Thank you for everything you've done for us.'

After an accomplished career at Michigan that saw him set school records for  passing completions, attempts, yards, touchdowns, and interceptions, Henne was drafted with the 57th overall pick in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Henne played his first season as a backup in Miami to Chad Pennington. He started 13 games the next season after Pennington was knocked out in Week 3.

He remained the starter for the 2010 season, but lost his starting job at one point and ended up getting injured that year. Nevertheless, Henne's 14 starts are the most he had in his career.

After suffering a season ending injury in the 2011 season, the Dolphins chose to release him - as Henne signed with Jacksonville in free agency.

Henne finished the 2012 season as the starter after QB1 Blaine Gabbert suffered a season ending injury.

Gabbert returned as the starter for the first few games of 2013, but he was eventually benched for Henne - who led the team to only a 4-12 record.

That offseason, the Jaguars drafted UCF quarterback Blake Bortles - who took over starting duties beginning with Week 4 of the 2014 season. Henne would only play three more games with the Jaguars before signing with the Chiefs in the 2018 offseason.

Since getting benched in Jacksonville, Henne played only 14 games across eight seasons - including just one start in the 2020 season with Kansas City.

Henne will be remembered in Kansas City for his heroics during the 2020 season's AFC Divisional round playoff game against the Cleveland Browns.

After Patrick Mahomes went down with a concussion in the third quarter, Henne took charge of the team.

He threw for only 66 yards and an interception, but also had a key third down run that kept the clock moving and ensured a 22-17 victory. The Chiefs would go to Super Bowl LV that season, where they would lose to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Henne would be called on to replace Mahomes in the 2022 season, after the MVP suffered an ankle injury against the Jaguars.

He once again took charge, driving the length of the field and completing a one-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce on the last throw of his NFL career.
