Republican liar George Santos says he'll run in 2024 despite ethics probe

George Santos is now weighing running for reelection in 2024 despite previous reports indicating he would not see a second term.

The embattled Republican congressman, who has been outed several times over as a pathological liar, is under an ethics investigation, but is still refusing to step down from his new post in Congress.

He is also now being connected to a case involving identity theft from 2017.

Santos previously signaled to Republican colleagues that he wouldn't seek reelection, but multiple GOP sources tell CNN that the New York lawmaker has recently been telling them that he is considering running for another two-year term.

Privately, Santos insists he will be cleared of all wrong-doing, claiming that it's his treasurer who will face scrutiny over his finances.

'Let me be very clear, I'm not leaving, I'm not hiding and I am NOT backing down,' Santos tweeted on Tuesday. 'I will continue to work for #NY03 and no amount of Twitter trolling will stop me.

'I'm looking forward to getting what needs to be done, DONE!' he concluded in the post.

Political consultant Chris Grant of Big Dog Strategies has advised Santos not to resign and to ride out the legal issues underway - and any others coming his way - a Republican source told CNN.

The latest report comes as it was revealed that police questioned Santos in 2017 regarding a card skimmer and identity-theft case in Washington state.

A Chase Bank security officer in Seattle saw through an ATM camera in April 2017 a man removing a card-skimming device on the machine, according to a new CBS News report. For reasons still unclear, the case is being linked back to Santos.

Gustavo Ribeiro Trelha was arrested months after he was seen removing the card skimmer device from the ATM and deported to his native Brazil from Orlando, Florida, where he was living.

Throughout the probe, detectives found inside Trelha's rental car an empty FedEx package with a sender address of one of Santos' former residences in Winter Park, Florida.

Law enforcement sources confirmed to CBS that Santos, the son of Brazilian immigrants, was interviewed as part of the investigation.

Trelha claimed he was paid $100 per day by a group based in Brazil and Florida to place and remove card skimmer devices on ATMs to illegally collect data of those inserting their cards into the machine.

An acquaintance of Santos says he told her in 2020 that he served as a confidential informant in the case, but that individual says they now question that claim.

Those who voted for Santos in New York's 3rd congressional district have started calling for the lawmaker to resign. Santos was lauded in the GOP after his win in the 2022 midterms as he flipped the district from blue to red and became the first openly gay Republican member elected to the House.

Shortly after being elected, however, reports started coming out revealing that Santos lied about much of his resume, including his career accomplishments, educational background and even his supposed Jewish heritage.

Launching him into deeper trouble was lies about where money came from that enriched his 2022 campaign, as law enforcement agencies look into the financing of his campaign, his supervising of a pet charity and his work for a company later ensnared in a Ponzi scheme probe.

Democrats officially kicked-off an effort last week to expel Santos from the House of Representatives, which has happened to only five other lawmakers in the history of the lower chamber.

Santos has denied any wrongdoing.
