Prince Harry interview LIVE: Gabor Mate speaks to Duke on Frogmore, Meghan, Andrew and King Charles

Prince Harry said Meghan Markle was 'from a different world' and 'helped draw me out' of Royal Life - as he praised his wife for being an 'exceptional human being' in his candid Q&A with trauma expert Gabor Maté. 

Admitting he felt 'incredibly free' after his bombshell memoir Spare was released, the prince said he could not have done it without Meghan. 

Speaking with Dr Maté, the 38-year-old said: 'People have said that my wife saved me, I was stuck in this world and she was from a different world and helped draw me out of that. 

'But none of the elements of my life would have been possible without me seeing it for myself.

Prince Harry has said he is not a 'victim' and isn't looking for sympathy but is sharing his experiences as an 'act of service'. 

Prince Harry told the trauma expert that he was hoping that sharing his experiences of mental health struggles would help others, including encouraging them to reach out for therapy.   

The £19-a-head tickets for the livestream also included a hardback copy of the Duke's memoir, Spare, which was first published in January.

Viewers of the conversation between Harry and Dr Mate, which cost £19 a ticket to watch, have reacted by saying they 'wish it had been longer'.

One audience member said: 'I wasn't ready for this conversation to end... It was so great! I need a second part!'

Another added: 'The conversation between Prince Harry and Dr Gabor Mate was exceptional.'

However, not all the reviews from the audience were positive, with one viewer saying: 'Prince Harry insists he's 'not looking for sympathy.' Good, because he is not going to get any from me.'

Prince Harry has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) during his conversation with Gabor Mate.

Dr Maté told Harry he believes he has ADD, which can affect people's concentration and often means they are easily distracted. 

His diagnosis prompted the prince to joke 'thanks for the free session'.

Prince Harry laid bare how he was diagnosed with PTSD after Princess Diana's death and said he was a good candidate for the Army because they 'recruit from broken homes'. 

The Duke of Sussex fielded questions from controversial 'toxic trauma' expert Dr Gabor Maté as part of an intimate conversation about 'living with loss and personal healing' that costed £17 a ticket with a copy of his memoir Spare thrown in. 

In a wide-ranging discussion that touched on his drug use, his wife Meghan Markle and the justification for the war in Afghanistan, Harry told the academic he did not see himself as a 'victim' or want sympathy.

In a question from an audience member, the pair were asked what purpose they would like to be remembered for.

Dr Mate said 'For me it's that people should become free', referring to the freedom from trauma as well as social and economic freedom.

Harry said: 'My purpose I guess would be - do not be controlled by fear, or do not allow fear to control you.'

In the final question of the session, Harry was asked whether he had been able to roam castles as a child and whether he found any trapdoors.

He said: 'Certainly as kids it was an an adventure running around that kind of a place.

'Not so many trapdoors but lots of fun things to investigate.

'You think that it's normal but it's anything but.'

Asked about raising children, Harry said it was important to allow them to be angry at times.

Harry said the number one thing about raising children was 'love - it has to be love.'

He added: 'Let them be themselves. There have to be rules, but one thing my wife and I talk about is if they have a moment of frustration, to allow them to have that and then talk about it afterwards.

'More of us as adults should be encouraged to have these outbursts, even if it's in to your pillow

'That's a practice I would love to be able to get into

'Kids having those outbursts is part of growing up.'

Asked about grief and joy by an audience member, Dr Mate and Harry discussed the importance of dealing with loss.

Dr Mate said: 'One of the first impacts of trauma is we lose the capacity to feel out true emotions.

'We disconnect from our feelings - especially from our grief.

'The more you can feel the grief, the more you can feel the joy.

'When you recover the capacity to feel the one you certainly recover the capacity to feel the other.'

Harr agreed, saying: 'The grieving process is essential.

'In parts of Africa I've experienced the grieving process where people will literally roll around for two days and just purge [their grief].

'We have to grieve, and the more we grieve the more we will experience joy.'

Speaking about dealing with the death of his mother, he said: 'I've been able to turn that [grief] into something positive rather than something that was just crushing.'

Answering questions about his early childhood trauma, Harry said he hoped he could help other people.

Speaking about the reaction to his book, Harry said: 'Sometimes I'm surprised and sometimes I'm not.

'It is the same group of people who react the same way when someone in a position like myself discusses trauma.

'As we've already discussed, I'm not a victim in this.

'The more they criticise, the more I feel the need to share.

'I found a way to be able to look around the criticisms and the abuse. What worries me is there are other people out there who see the reaction that I get that then encourages them or discourages them.'

He added that 'The gratitude and the love that I've felt has been extraordinary' since the release of his book.

Speaking about reviews left on Amazon he said: 'Some people have written essays. To hear people's own take on my own story has been humbling and it makes it all worth it.'

Speaking about using psychedelic substances to deal with trauma, Dr Mate denied accusations he had been threatened with arrest by the Canadian government for using Ayahuasca with his patients.

He said: 'I was never threatened with arrest.'

He also spoke about the side effect of the drugs, denying that they can include vomiting and hallucinations.

He said: 'You purge with it sometimes, it's a good thing.

'It doesn't give you hallucination - it gives you visions... You think it's really happening.'

Dr Mate added: 'I don't think it's a panacea' for dealing with trauma.

Harry agreed, describing his own experiences using psychedelics.

He said: 'It was the cleaning of the windshield, removal of life's filters.

'It removed it all for me and brought me a sense of relaxation, release, comfort, a lightness that I managed to hold onto for a period of time

'For me I started doing it recreationally and then started to realise how good it was for me. I would say it is one of the fundamental parts of my life that changed me and helped me deal with the traumas and the pains of the past.'

Harry said that he was 'in a state of shock' from a young age.

He said: 'Since age 12 apart from being in a state of shock I was in fight or flight,' adding he had learned the importance of 'self-regulation' to deal with his mental health.

Dr Mate said: 'We don't develop self-regulation, we ha to learn it.'

Harry added that his therapist told him 'We're dealing with 12 year-old Harry here' during one of his sessions.

Dr Mate responded: 'At a certain point you revert to much younger ages - when you get hurt, when you get upset. 

'Trauma's what happens inside of ourselves.'

Speaking about his mother giving him to someone else to save his life under the Nazi regime, Dr Mate said: 'The trauma was what I made that mean... my mother thought she was saving my life but I thought I was being abandoned.'

'Who gets abandoned? Someone's who's not worthy'

 The trauma expert added that similar traumas had to be dealt with in adulthood so they were not passed on to the next generation. 

Harry suggested that he did not agree with the invasion of Afghanistan, where he served as a helicopter pilot.

After Dr Mate voiced his opposition to the war in Afghanistan, Harry said that 'a lot of people' assumed that all soldiers serving in the armed forces agreed with the war, but many did not.

Harry said: 'Once you sign up, you do what you're told to do 

'A lot of us didn't agree or disagree, you were doing what you were trained to do and what you were sent to do.'

Dr Mate quoted a section of Harry's book where he described his frustration that no one in his family wanted to 'break free and live', asking him if he felt he had been able to do so.

Harry responded that he had, adding that he felt 'a great weight off my shoulders' after leaving the Royal Family.

Dr Mate said 'You're working hard to become more aware, more kind but the more you did, the more distant you became from your own family.'

Harry said: 'A lot of families are complicated, a lot of families are dysfunctional - but for me when I was doing therapy regularly... I felt that I learned a new language.' 

He added that other members of his family 'didn't speak that language'.

Speaking about his time in therapy the prince said he told his therapist: 'This is working for me and I'm starting to go back to the point of trauma and unpack everything so I can be truly happy... but at the same time I'm feeling more and more distant from my loved ones and my family'.

Harry said his therapist responded: 'This is what happens for a lot of people.'

Dr Mate said: 'Ideally you shouldn't have to face that choice but a lot of people have to make a decision - am I going to be myself or am I going to... please others.'

Dr Gabor Maté told Harry that he could see 'a lot of trauma' in his childhood despite being 'a scion of one of the richest families in the world, gilded with power and privilege.'

Harry said that he tried to make an easier life for his own children to give them a different upbringing.

The prince said: 'We only know what we know, and for myself and my wife we do the best we can as parents - learning from our own past and overlapping those mistakes, perhaps, and growing... to break that cycle'

'You certainly don't make friends in the process, in the short term.'

Dr Maté also raised the importance of 'Being held and understood and heard' 

Speaking about Harry's childhood, he said: 'I know there were great moments but there was also a lot of trauma and suffering.

Harry responded: 'Isn't that the same for most people?'

Dr Maté said: 'It's whether we recognise it or don't recognise it, deal with it or don't deal with it.

He added that he did not read Harry's book for the drama but praised its 'universal humanity'.

Harry discussed the moment when his father told him his mother, Diana, had died.

Dr Mate recounts a section from the prince's book when he describes Charles breaking the news without hugging him.

The trauma expert also spoke about Harry hugging his brother when returning from Afghanistan but having a lack of physical contact with his family.

Harry said: 'It leaves me in the position of a father having two children trying to smother them with love.

'I feel a huge responsibility not to pass on any trauma or negative experiences that I've had as a kid or as a man growing up.

'There are times when I catch myself when I should smothering them with that love but I might not be.'

He added that if he did not hug his own children, it would have a 'similar' impact on them as he experienced growing up.

Gabor Maté has said Harry starting therapy 'was like bursting a bubble'.

Harry agreed, saying: 'My awareness to my own story my own self was distorted, perhaps because of my environment and what it foes to you but also because of society.'

He added: 'When I started to unpack 12 year-old Harry and when my mother died it was scary.

'I thought that when I went to therapy that it would cure me, and that I would lose whatever I had left of my mother... it was the opposite - I turned into what I thought should be sadness to show that I missed her into knowing that she would want me to be happy.'

Dr Gabor Maté begins the conversation by saying there were 'two divergent stream of responses' to the event - those who had and hadn't read Harry's book 'Spare.'

He said that those who hadn't read the book were 'resentful' towards Harry and those who had were 'grateful' to him for sharing his story.

The Prince responded by saying 'I definitely don't see myself as a victim', adding that his experiences and his work with mental health 'sharing my story will help some people out there'.

Harry added that 'it feels like an act of service' sharing his experiences through his book.

Prince Harry's talk with Dr Gabor Maté will begin at 5pm GMT (12pm ET) today.

The conversation will see the pair discussing 'living with loss and the importance of personal healing'.

The event is expected to see the Duke of Sussex revisit a variety of events from his personal history, two months after the release of his explosive book Spare.

After being evicted from Frogmore Cottage, Prince Harry is expected to fire 'plenty of ammunition' at his family in a Q&A promoting his memoir today, but it's just the latest in a long line of disclosures.  

The two will discuss 'living with loss and the importance of personal healing', after Harry's memoir was dominated by his account of struggling to come to terms with the loss of his mother Princess Diana. 

However, the book also raised eyebrows with intimate revelations about his frost-nipped penis, and alluding to having sex with Meghan at Soho House. 

While Harry's comments about his 'todger' grabbed headlines around the world, there was no shortage of highly personal titbits shared in the book.

Prince Harry's decision to talk with a trauma expert could see him revisit a variety of his own troubles in public.

Difficulties Harry has faced in his life had until very recently remained largely private and personal to the father-of-two.

But his tell-all autobiography - combined with a series of televised sit-down interviews - have brought them all into the public arena in full. 

More than anything, the death of his mother Princess Diana has shaped his life and his views on certain topics.

Prince Harry was urged yesterday to reconsider his talk with Dr Gabor Maté due to the trauma expert's past controversial comments.

Dr Maté has compared Hamas to the Jewish heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising against the Nazis and once branded Israel's government terrorists.

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in New York, told the Jewish Chronicle: 'Whoever made the arrangements to have this individual appear with Prince Harry did him no favours.

'If Prince Harry knew this man's record and still chose him for the interview, our center would criticise the prince for such an inappropriate choice.'

Dr Maté, a Hungarian-Canadian physician, has his own harrowing story. Born in Nazi-occupied Budapest in 1944, when he was five months old his maternal grandparents were among the Jews murdered in Auschwitz. He was taken from his mother and hidden with an aunt until the war ended.  

But it is not clear if Harry is aware of some of the controversies - and hurt - Dr Maté has caused with some of his words, especially on Israel and Palestine. 

Prince Harry may feel he has nothing to lose after being evicted from Frogmore Cottage and has saved 'plenty of ammunition' to fire at his family in a Q&A promoting his memoir tomorrow, experts have warned.

Buckingham Palace will be watching his talk with Gabor Maté with trepidation, given the prince’s book Spare was full of attacks on his father and brother. What Harry says may even influence whether he and Meghan receive an invitation to the coronation, one expert believes.

Royal biographer Phil Dampier said: 'The King and Prince William would have hoped that Harry calmed down and stopped giving interviews after the publicity interviews he did for Spare but it seems not.

'In fact he may feel he has nothing to lose after bring booted out of Frogmore Cottage. So sadly, with just nine weeks to the coronation, relations between him and his family seem to be getting worse, not better.'

The 'trauma expert' who Prince Harry is joining for an intimate livestream chat to promote his memoir is a Hungarian-Canadian doctor who was once threatened with arrest for using a 'spiritual' psychedelic drug to treat patients. 

Gabor Maté has 20 years' experience working with people suffering from addiction and mental illness, with other specialisms such as stress and child development. 

Prince Harry's conversation today comes after it was revealed that he and Meghan were evicted from Frogmore Cottage by Buckingham Palace.

The couple were allegedly given 'weeks' to pack up their British home after Harry's memoir Spare hit the shelves in January.

Sources have claimed Harry and Meghan were not as 'stunned' by the decision as was previously reported but were 'ok' about leaving their British home.

The pair are based in Montecito, California, having left the UK in 2020 after stepping away from royal duties.

Prince Harry will speak with 'toxic trauma' therapist Gabor Maté today in what has been billed as an 'intimate conversation' about loss and healing.

It comes almost two months after the Duke of Sussex stunned the world with a series of revelations and allegations in his book 'Spare'.
