Rupert Murdoch held a low-key celebration for his 92nd birthday at the weekend as his company faces a massive defamation lawsuit over the US election.

The News Corp founder was pictured in an Instagram story posted by his 22-year-old daughter Grace on Saturday.

Murdoch can be seen standing up having just blown out a solitary candle on the white two-tiered cake, topped with strawberries and fringed with milk chocolate tear drops.

In another shot, the words 'Happy Birthday Dad!' are written in milk chocolate on a slab of white chocolate laid across the top of the cake.

Despite his advanced age, Murdoch shows no sign of slowing down.

Last month, the billionaire reportedly bought a seven-bedroom apartment overlooking Central Park in New York for a cool $A45million.

The full-floor apartment, which spans 6,500 square feet and has a 38-foot-long living room that leads onto a terrace overlooking the park, was originally owned by opera singer and philanthropist Alice Tully, according to the Wall Street Journal

In January - less than six months since his divorce from fourth wife Jerry Hall was finalised - Murdoch was spotted enjoying a holiday with a new female companion.

He was seen soaking up the sun in Barbados in the company of Ann-Lesley Smith, 66, a one-time police chaplain and widow of US country music star Chester Smith.

It comes as he is dealing with the fallout from a $2.4billion defamation lawsuit brought against Fox News Network and its parent company Fox Corp by Dominion Voting Systems.

The firm, which is one of the largest providers of electronic vote counting machines in the US, is claiming that its business was harmed by falsehoods aired by Fox News based on Donald Trump's lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

In a sworn deposition ahead of the trial, Murdoch acknowledged some of the network's stars endorsed the false claims that the election was stolen.

But he denied all of Fox backed Trump's baseless claims of widespread fraud after his election defeat.

Fox News denies defamation - saying the hosts' words were taken out of context.

A jury trial is expected to begin in Delaware in the United States next month.

The case has potential ramifications for a separate lawsuit being brought by Murdoch's eldest son, Lachlan against Australian news website, Crikey.

He is suing over a column he claims falsely suggested he 'illegally conspired with Donald Trump to incite' the deadly January 2021 US Capitol riot.

Last week, Crikey's publisher Private Media confirmed that their lawyers were 'examining' Murdoch Senior's acknowledgment that some Fox News stars endorsed Trump's lie that the election was stolen.

Murdoch's low-key birthday celebrations on Saturday were in stark contrast to his 90th party held in 2021.

Around 130 high-powered guests from the media world were invited to the Tavern on the Green in New York's Central Park.

Attendees at the sit-down dinner, which was hosted by Murdoch's fourth wife Jerry Hall, included media titans Barry Diller and Peter Chernin, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft, according to Variety

However, one conspicuous absence was his son James who had sought to distance himself from his father after criticising Fox News' and some of News Corp's Australian coverage of issues such as climate change.

Grace and her 20-year-old sister Chloe are the children from Murdoch's third marriage to Wendi Murdoch.

Tantalising snapshots of the global media mogul's private life have been shared on Grace's Instagram before.

Last year, she posted a picture of her father cuddling her new puppy - an image entirely at odds with Murdoch's fearsome reputation.

Grace is currently finishing her bachelor's degree in history and East Asian Literature at Yale, while Chloe is reportedly studying at Yale university.

Hollywood A-listers Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman are their godparents.
