Andrew Toles hasn't played Major League Baseball since 2018, but was recently signed to a new contract by the Los Angeles Dodgers so that he can have health insurance as he reportedly continues to battle mental illness.
The signing was first reported by Los Angeles Times last week. It marks the fifth consecutive year the Dodgers have opted to renew Toles' contract.
The 30-year-old Georgia native was found homeless sleeping near an airport in Key West, Florida in 2020. The following year, his father revealed to USA Today that his son was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
'We are having challenges,'' Alvin Toles told USA Today. 'But nothing that God and I can't handle. Schizophrenia, it's just so tough. I mean, he can't even watch TV. He hears voices and the TV at the same time, so it's kind of confusing. I've seen him looking at some baseball games on his laptop, but I don't think he really understands what's going on.'
Alvin described his son as having a 'zombie-like condition,' and Andrew's sister told USA Today he has been in more than 20 mental health facilities since 2019.

It's unclear what, if anything, Toles will be paid in 2023. According to Spotrac.com, he has earned more than $2 million in his MLB career.
LA's decision to keep Toles in the fold was applauded by former Dodgers pitcher Tom Koehler, who signed with the team in 2017, but injured his shoulder and ultimately never suited up in blue.
'I love this,' Koehler said on Twitter. 'Saw it first hand how they treated me when I could provide nothing for them. I am not surprised they are helping Andrew. It's bigger than sports.'
Toles first reached the majors with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012, but resurfaced during the Dodgers' playoff run in 2016, when he went 6-for-13 with a pair of doubles and four runs scored in LA's loss to the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series.
