Gravel caused the red flag

It seems the gravel that flew onto the track after Albon's crash has caused the red flag.

Poor old Russell looks gutted, with that strategic decision to come in and pit really not paying off.

Hamilton is in prime position now but Verstappen has bounced back well from his disastrous start.

The race will resume in 10 minutes time.

LAP 9/58: RED FLAG OUT

A red flag is out now and anyone who hasn't pitted will effectively get a free pit now which is positive for Hamilton.

But it looks as if Russell has dropped to seventh in a blow for him.

We've just seen Albon's exit from the race again. He just seemed to lose control of his car with a big oversteer and he's smashed into the side of the track. Thankfully he is all ok though.

What a chaotic start to the race this has been

ALBON OUT

The safety car is back out!

Alex Albon was flying in sixth but he's out, he's lost the rear of his car at turn seven - a cruel end after such a promising start.

Russell and Sainz are now into the pits and Hamilton is in first but he's just said to his radio the safety car has caused him 'a massive disadvantage'.

LAP 5/58: Verstappen keeping the pressure on

Sainz is up to fourth ahead of Alonso but the front three are pulling away.

Verstappen has just posted the fastest lap so far at 1.23.104 as he keeps the pressure on the front two.

Russell currently holds a lead 0.591 seconds.

LAP 3/58: Verstappen not happy with Lewis

Verstappen is not happy!

After a dreadful start for him, he's complaining that Hamilton pushed him wide but it doesn't look like the Brit did anything wrong.

It's still a Russell-Hamilton one-two and the safety car has gone so we're back on.

06:07
CHARLES LECLERC OUT

Charles Leclerc has gone off into the gravel at the first corner and he's out.

A safety car is out as his car is still in the way.

Ocon is in for an early pit stop to put the hard tyres on.

What a first lap that was.

It looks as if Leclerc got tagged by someone - I think it was Stroll but he had nowhere to go and there will be no further investigation

RUSSELL NOSES AHEAD

What a start from George Russell on the first corner.

Hamilton in front of Verstappen too!

06:04
AND WE'RE OFF!

Here we go...

We're nearly ready to go

Other notable starting positions

Apart from a Verstappen-Russell-Hamilton top three, Fernando Alonso lines-up in fourth.

It is a fifth-place start for Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, with team-mate Charles Leclerc in seventh.

Unfortunately for Sergio Perez he'll be starting from last place in the grid after a disastrous qualifying performance when he beached his car on the gravel.

Brit Lando Norris begins in 13th.

Anthony Hamilton reveals Lewis is feeling good

Lewis Hamilton's dad, Anthony, has also been speaking with Sky as he reflected on Hamilton's superb Grand Prix debut in Melbourne in 2007.

'I remember that day. It was a great day and a great start to an F1 career,' he said.

'Everybody's feeling good ahead of today, Lewis is in a really good mood. It's such a long race and one-stop so you have to go with the strategy that's safe.

'I keep telling him you've got to love the car and it's difficult if you don't but he's going to love it soon I'm sure.'

The Australian anthem is now being sung with lights out under 15 minutes away.

Kylie Minogue refuses to pick a favourite

Australian popstar and another local hero Kylie Minogue has just appeared on the grid.

She's in good spirits could barely hide her excitement as she said: 'It means so much to be here in my hometown. It's a magnificent day and so much excitement.

'I'll be cheering for general great cheers.'

Verstappen sensationally threatens to quit

World Champion Max Verstappen is never shy to let it be known what he really thinks and it was no different yesterday when the Dutchman sent a stark warning to F1 bosses.

Verstappen insisted if more sprint races are added to an already packed calendar he may be forced to quit the sport, as he urged them not to mess with the sports 'DNA'.

He'll be looking for his first Australian Grand Prix title today.

Relaxed Bottas loving life

Valtteri Bottas has just been speaking to Sky and it's clear the Alfa Romeo driver is relishing his time on the team.

Bottas - who also has an Australian partner and spends a lot of time in the country as a result - has been sporting a new look since the off-season with a strong mullet on display.

He seems much-more relaxed since leaving Mercedes and he's just revealed 'mullet life is great', before he added: 'I really feel like I can now be who I am.'

He'll start from 19th today though having failed to make it past Q1.

High costs for punters at Victoria Park

The Australian Grand Prix is breaking attendance records, with an expected crowd of 130,000 to show up at Albert Park on Sunday - but F1 fans who are feeling the pinch of the cost of living crisis might want to think twice about showing up.

More than 300,000 people have enjoyed the carnival-like atmosphere and thrilling action over the past three days in Melbourne despite the cold and wet weather.

Long queues for food and drink haven't dampened anyone's spirits so far, but the eye-watering cost of some items just might.

Verstappen looks to end Red Bull drought

Despite their dominance elsewhere over the past decade, you have to go back to 2011 to when Red Bull last won the Australian Grand Prix with Sebastian Vettel's triumph.

Lewis Hamilton has two wins here in his career, while recent years have been dominated by Ferrari as they've won three of the last four titles.

This includes Charles Leclerc's superb victory last year.

Mercedes gatecrash the top three

It was a brilliant day of qualifying on Saturday for Mercedes after their well-publicised struggles this season.

Much to their surprise, George Russell will line-up in second place and Lewis Hamilton in third after they pushed Max Verstappen all the way.

Hamilton has just been speaking to Sky Sports, promising to take risks today and insisting he is confident he can win the race.

We've got an exciting prospect in store.
