While it's a beloved food chain, Five Guys tends to be a more expensive option than other fast-food establishments, and it has finally explained why.

The chain, which was founded in 1986, in Arlington County, Virginia, has raised eyebrows after customers shared their eye-watering bills online.

One disgruntled woman was shocked when she had to fork out $74 for an order, asking on TikTok 'when did Five Guys become a five star restaurant?'

Speaking to The Rakyat Post, Iain Ross-Mackenzie, Director Of Operations-APAC at Five Guys International, explained that the fresh ingredients and the fact that customers can customize their orders to the extreme are some of the reasons behind the brand's prices.

He added that the brand also specialize in providing an All American experience, which is why its menu is the same all around the world.

The chain's menu includes four basic burgers, four hotdogs and four types of sandwich, which is a simpler offer than some of its competitors.

A regular cheeseburger by itself will set back customers $7.69 (£7.95 in UK chains) while a bacon cheeseburger will cost $8.69 (£8.95). Meanwhile, a small helping of fries costs $3.09 (£2.95).

Customizing is one of the things that makes the brand particularly appealing to customers.

Diners can choose from 15 free toppings, which they can combine whichever way they want to create their dream meal.

'Customer choice [...] is really important to us. We want to put control back in the consumer’s pocket,' Iain said.

The way the brand sources its ingredients also adds to the price tag at the till.  'Nothing in store is frozen. We only ever use fresh ingredients,' Iain explained.

Diners are free to customize their burgers whichever way they want, which is why it's so popular, Iain Ross-Mackenzie, Director Of Operations-APAC at Five Guys International, explained (a Five Guys order in Columbus, Georgia)

Both the meat and vegetables in the burgers are all fresh, and the potatoes used for the fries are hand cut in the restaurants.

Five Guys' all over the world also showcase the provenance of the potatoes they serve each day on signs displayed in the restaurant.

And while some other chains like to mix their menus up to suit different regions of the world or to diversify their offer, Five Guys like to stick to its formula.

Iain explained that there is a clear reason why the restaurant chose to do so.

'People come to Five Guys for a simple, great American burger. And that’s what they will get here,' he said.

He went on to explain that the chain prides itself on its All-American community feel, where customers know both the food and how they like to have it.

This comes as a woman complained about her eye-watering Five Guys bill in December of last year.

The blogger, known as RetailCheapskate, shared her Five Guys' receipt on TikTok, claiming it was 'highway robbery.'

Her video, where she revealed she had to pay $74 (£60) for an order including four burgers, two fries and drinks, was watched more than 2.9 million times.

Her receipt showed the woman had ordered two 'little' cheeseburgers, two regular fries, two bacon cheeseburgers, a large soda, and three regular sodas.
