Kevin McCarthy is hosting Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in his home state for a bilateral meeting Wednesday instead of traveling to the island-nation amid rising threats from China.

The bipartisan, high-level meeting will take place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California on April 5, his office announced on Monday.

The House Speaker is following in his predecessor Nancy Pelosi's footsteps by signaling support for Taiwan's autonomy from the Chinese Communist Party, but won't be traveling to the small nation in the South China Sea.

But the meeting in Los Angeles doesn't mean that McCarthy won't at a later date visit Taiwan despite the careful steps the nation's president took in her most recent trip west.

McCarthy told reporters earlier this month that meeting the Taiwanese president in America 'has nothing to do with my travel, if I would go to Taiwan or not.'

'China can't tell me where or when to go, and none of that discussion ever happened. If the president happens to be in America, then I'm going to meet with her,' he added.

The planned meeting has already provoked threats from China with the Associated Press reporting that the CCP has promised 'resolute countermeasures' in the aftermath of the visit.

Tsai's carefully orchestrated travel has been branded as her 'transiting' through the United States by way of California to Taiwan on her way back from official engagements in Central America.

The Taiwanese president reportedly already met with Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries while 'transiting' through his home state of New York.

McCarthy's upcoming meeting will draw even more ire from China as Beijing and President Xi Jinping continue to assert Taiwan is its territory despite recognition from the international community of the small island nation's autonomy.
