Louisville shooting LIVE: Multiple casualties reported after 'active shooter' opens fire at bank

As the four victims of the Louisville mass shooting have been identified, including a top bank executive who was a close friend of the state's Governor, relatives are now taking to social media to remember those slain by 25-year-old Connor Sturgeon.

Of those was Kentucky resident Michael Williams, who is related to 57-year-old Juliana Farmer and published a post to Facebook to remember his niece, revealing she had just moved to Louisville this year.

He shared texts between the pair sent earlier this month - in which he asked how she was liking the city. He revealed she moved after receiving a job offer at Old National Bank, where she worked as a loan analyst, according to her LinkedIn page.

The texts showed how both Williams and the eventual were proud of the recent moves she made in her career, and optimistic about her future success.

He also shared a photo of Williams as a child, accompanied by a heartfelt caption memorializing his late family member.

'My beautiful, sweet niece, Juliana Farmer. My heart is broken. You said, "Unk, I got something to tell you' I said, "Are you pregnant?"

;She said heck nah and we fell out laughing! She told me she was moving to Louisville, she had a great job opportunity. Now we're mourning you losing your life at the job. I'm just hurt.'

Five people were killed and nine injured in the Monday morning shooting, including the shooter — an employee of the bank — who was killed in the shootout.

Among those killed was Farmer, 45, whose LinkedIn page states she was a loan analyst with the bank. Other tributes continue to surface online as investigators vet the shooting. Their investigation is ongoing.

Louisville gunman Connor Sturgeon, 25, grew up in Floyd's Knob, Indiana, and was a star basketball player at 6-foot-4-inches at Floyd Central High School, where his father, Todd, served as the coach.

The elder Sturgeon resigned from the high school in 2022 saying he wanted to spend more time with Connor and a younger son, the Louisville Courier Journal reports.

A former friend and teammate of Sturgeon's from high school described the gunman as smart, popular and a star athlete in high school track, football and basketball.

He was named a National Merit Scholar in 2015. 

'I know everyone always says this about shooters, but I truly would have never expected it to be him,' the unnamed classmate told the Daily Beast.

He noted that Sturgeon always wore a helmet during basketball games because he had suffered so many concussions. An Instagram account that was apparently liked to Sturgeon was under the username 'Mr. Concussion.'

'The big thing I keep going back to is that in the first year of high school, we played football together in eighth grade, he was out most of the year because he had multiple concussions. Then he had a couple more in high school,' the friend said.

'I'm not saying it's the cause, but I always think back to that... There were times I'd wonder, will this catch up with him? But never in this way. He's the last person I'd expect would do this.'

Another former friend of the shooter's also told CNN he never saw any red flags.

'This is a total shock. He was a really good kid who came from a really good family,' the friend said. 'I can't even say how much this doesn't make sense, I can't believe it.'

Authorities say Connor Sturgeon, 25, started shooting up the Old National Bank with an AR-15 style assault rifle at around at 8.30am on Monday after being fired from his position as a syndications associate and portfolio banker.

Images shared on social media show that he had posted on his Instagram story a series of memes — including one of Kylo Ren from Star Wars saying 'I know what I have to do but I don't know if I have the strength to do it' and another reading: 'They won't listen to words or protests. Let's see if they hear this.'

During the shooting, it was overheard on police scanners that Sturgeon was 'suicidal and texted a friend that he would "shoot up the bank" and had left his parents a note informing them of his intentions to attack his workplace, CNN reports. 

Police also confirmed that Sturgeon livestreamed the shooting on his Instagram, which has since been taken down and is now in police custody.

The gunman was also killed in the shooting, but it is unclear if he died from a self-inflicted wound or from injuries he sustained as he exchanged gunfire with officers at the scene.

The four victims killed in the Louisville mass shooting have been identified as employees of the Old National Bank.

Tommy Elliot, 63, was a senior vice president at the bank, and also a close friend of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.

Elliot had previously donated $2,000 to Beshear's gubernatorial campaign in 2018 and had donated to many Democratic candidates over the years. He was well known in local and state Democratic circles and served on Beshear's inaugural committee in 2019. 

'Tommy Elliot helped me build my law career, helped me become governor, gave me advice on how to be a good dad,' the governor said Monday. 'These are irreplaceable, amazing individuals that a terrible act of violence tore from all of us.'

Joshua Barrick, 40, appears to have had a wife and two young children and was a senior vice president of commercial real estate at the bank, where he had worked since last August, according to his LinkedIn.

Juliana Farmer, 45, a mother and grandmother, was a commercial loan specialist.

Jim Tutt, 64, was the CRE Market Executive for the Southern Region of Old National Bank.

Louisville police identified the officer murdered by the Old National Bank gunman as Nicholas Wilt.

The 26-year-old officer had graduated from the police academy and joined the force just 10 days ago on March 31.

Officer Wilt was shot in the head while engaging the gunman and was rushed into brain surgery following the shootout. Police said he was stable after surgery but remains in critical condition.

Two other officers were struck in the altercation, with one being struck in the side and the other suffering injuries to their elbow. Both of those officers are in stable condition.

Authorities say Connor Sturgeon, 25, was responsible for the latest mass shooting on Monday when he entered the bank with an AR-15 style assault rifle and started firing.

Sturgeon's LinkedIn profile shows that he was employed for just one year at the bank as a syndications associate and portfolio banker after previously serving as an intern. It also shows that he earned a Master's in Finance from the University of Alabama, which the university later confirmed.

The profile notes that he uses 'he/him' pronouns, and listed 'teamwork' as one of his skills. Police said he livestreamed the shooting on social media.

A motive for the mass shooting, in which he allegedly killed four others and injured nine, remains unclear, though unconfirmed reports suggest he was suicidal and disgruntled with his workplace. 

Sturgeon was also killed in the shooting, but it is unclear if he died from a self-inflicted wound or from injuries he sustained as he exchanged gunfire with officers at the scene.

His four victims were identified as 40-year-old Joshua Barrick,  63-year-old Thomas Elliot, 45-year-old Juliana Farmer, and 64-year-old James Tutt. All four were employees of the bank.

A witness to the horrific Louisville mass shooting at the Old National Bank has described being covered in his colleague's blood after the gunman opened fire on the conference room where they were holding a meeting. 

Early on Monday morning a gunman with at least one 'long assault rifle' entered the bank and shot several people, killing four and injuring eight others, including two police officers. The gunman has also died. 

One witness who spoke with WHAS11 said they saw the entire situation unfold from inside a conference room in the bank. 

'He just started firing,' said Troy Haste, an Old National Bank employee according to his LinkedIn. 'I didn't see his face. We were in the conference room. Whoever was next to me got shot, their blood's on me.'

'We have a break room. I got in there, shut the door for a second, and then I was looking around opening the door to see where he was at, and I could see him still shooting,' Haste said.

'He just started shooting. He had a long assault rifle,' Haste said while shaking.

The Old National Bank employee also said the whole situation unfolded on the first floor of the building as the group was in a meeting. 

Another man with Haste said he thought the shooting was construction and that another person told him: 'Run, there's a shooter in there.'

Vice President Kamala Harris called on lawmakers to push for change in the wake of the Louisville mass shooting that left five dead and nine wounded.

Harris tweeted a statement on the vice president's official account calling for a balance between preserving the right to bear arms while also protecting the lives of Americans from gun violence.

'We grieve for those lost and pray for those wounded in Louisville, the 146th mass shooting in our nation this year,' she wrote.

One of the two police offices wounded in the mass shooting at the Old National Bank in Louisville, Kentucky, remains in critical condition, according to the University of Louisiana Hospital.

At a press conference Monday morning, authorities said the officer had gone into surgery after being wounded in the shootout.

The officers were two of the nine people wounded in the shooting. Five people including the shooter died.

President Joe Biden condemned 'senseless' gun violence in a response to the Louisville shooting posted on the official presidential Twitter account.

In it he said Americans were dying over 'inaction' on gun legislation and called on congressional Republicans to act.

'Once again, our nation mourns after a senseless act of gun violence – Jill and I pray for the lives lost and impacted by today's shooting,' Biden wrote.

'Too many Americans are paying for the price of inaction with their lives.'

Authorities have confirmed nine people were wounded in the shooting Monday morning, including seven civilians and two officers who responded to the scene.

At least one of the officers was brought to the hospital in critical condition.

Three people have since been discharged from the hospital, according to University of Louisiana Health.

Terrifying footage captured the moment shots rang out across the busy Louisville street at rush hour as the shooter carried out their attack on the downtown bank.

Video taken by a bystander outside the Old National Bank on Monday morning showed heavily armed police officers scrambling to move civilians from the area as a series of deafening gunshots erupted from the bank.

Five people including the gunman are dead, and at least eight people including a police officer are said to be in critical condition. Authorities confirmed the shooter was a former or current employee, but their motive remains unclear. It is also unclear whether they shooter died by officers' gunfire or from a self-inflicted wound.

As sirens blared and rush hour traffic came to a standstill, officers could be seen trying to move civilians out of danger while shouting 'Active shooter at the bank! Get out of your car! Active shooter at the bank!'

Gunfire continued to sound, then a police officer clad in body armor could be seen pulling a rifle out of the trunk of his car before charging into the fray.

Employees of the Old National Bank said they were in the bank office when a colleague came in and said they's seen the shooter enter the building carrying guns.

They called more employees to the office and locked the doors, and then they called police and hunkered down in a men's room.

'But before the police got there, we started hearing shooting,' employee Tammy Madigan told The Daily Beast. 'The bathrooms on our floor have keycode entry, so it was probably the safest place we could think of to hide. So the six of us went into the men’s room, turned off all the sound on our phones, tried to be as quiet as we could.'

She said gunfire continued as they hid, and recalled hearing people yelling 'Blue down! Blue down!' indicating an officer had been wounded.

Finally, Madigan said they heard police calling for anybody hiding to come out.

'But we didn’t know if it was really the police or the shooter trying to get us to come out,' Madigan said.

Police finally were able to coax Madigan and her colleagues out, and when they took an elevator down from the office to exit the bank the doors opened up on the shooter's dead body.

'When the elevator door opened, the shooter was just laying there, dead,' she told The Daily Beast. 'There was lots of glass all over. One of the girls in my office was just breaking down.'

'One of the guys was pushing the button to close the doors, so the police let us go out through the basement, and then took us over to Slugger Field, where they began taking statements from everybody in the building. I bet there were 100 cops there, I don’t know how many shooters were involved but I know they got one.'

Louisville police confirmed that the shooter was a former or current employee of the Old National Bank. Authorities said they believe the shooter acted alone.

The shooter was killed when police responded to the scene, though it remains unclear whether they were killed by police or by a self-inflicted wound.

Four bystanders were killed when the shooter opened fire around 8:30am, before the bank branch opened for the day.

At least nine people were wounded and are being treated at a nearby hospital. Two people are in critical condition, including one of the two police officers wounded in the shootout.

Police said they responded to the scene within three minutes of the gunfire breaking out, and that they arrived while the shooter was still firing. 

Caleb Goodlett told WLKY-TV he got a call from his wife while she was sheltering inside the vault at the Old National Bank.

Goodlett said his wife told him there was an active shooter at the bank, and that she begged him to call the police to send help.

He said by the time he called authorities, they were already responding to the scene.

The shooting began before the bank had opened.

A witness who was driving by the Old National Bank in Louisville at about 8:30am described seeing a man lying face down on the sidewalk, and then heard gunfire erupt over her head.

'I had just dropped my son of at work on River Road,' she told WDRB. 'I was at the stop light, and the first thing that I saw - there was a guy across the street at the intersection and he was lying down at the entrance to a hotel.'

'As I was sitting at that intersection, gunfire erupted, like, right over my head. I didn't know if it was going at the bank or out of the bank I took off.'

'When I turned, I saw that one of the windows in the bank had been blown out,' she said, adding that police arrived a short time later.

'They were coming from everywhere,' the witness said. 'The police were coming out of their cars with black rifles. I just ducked in my car and waited there.'

Police said five people were killed in the shooting, and six have been transported to the hospital.

Authorities confirmed the shooter had been 'neutralized,' and that there is no present danger at the scene.

One of the six victims of the shooting was a police officer.

It remains unclear to what degree the victims were harmed.

All have been transported to a local hospital.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed it had responded to the scene of the shooting, as did the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. 

Multiple people have died in a shooting outside the Old National Bank in Louisville, Kentucky. 

Metro police are now responding to the area of the five story building, on the 300 block of East Main Street in the downtown area of the city and have advised the public to avoid the area.

Dispatchers heard on the police scanners have indicated that the shooting occurred on the first floor of the building, which is in front of Louisville Slugger Stadium — just hours from Nashville, where a gunman recently opened fire at a Christian school and killed six people.
