Milwaukee Brewers rookie reliever Gus Varland was blasted on the right hand and then his jaw with a vicious line drive by Manny Machado.

The 105.1 mph liner forced Verland to come of Saturday's game against the San Diego Padres.

The ball caromed off Varland to Brewers shortstop Willy Adames, who threw out Machado.

Varland fell to the ground in scary scenes during the bottom of the eighth inning, with the sheer force knocking him down.

He woozily got to his feet and dropped his glove as two teammates and a trainer rushed to his side.

He was helped to his knees as he was tended to before being helped off the field. X-rays were negative and Varland said he felt fine.

'I'm more mad about that slider location,' Varland said postgame. 'It felt good out of my hand, it just didn´t get there. It came back at me, hit my hand and my chin and my left forearm.

'It just kind of rocked me a little bit. I felt fine though. I felt like I could have kept going but I think that's the adrenaline talking there.'

'Don´t hang your sliders middle-middle. Lesson learned. I'm just grateful I'm all right.'

It was Varland's sixth appearance this season. San Diego went on to win the game 10-3.

The Pads snapped its three-game losing streak behind Jake Cronenworth's pair of two-run homers. The infielder also finished with six RBIs.
