The King's coronation procession will be led by a cross that includes religious relics gifted to the monarch by the Pope.

Two shards of the True Cross – which is said to be the cross used in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ – were given to Charles by Pope Francis to mark the coronation.

The small fragments have been incorporated into the Cross of Wales, which will be seen by millions as it is carried into Westminster Abbey on May 6.

Both pieces are shaped as crosses, one being 1cm in size and the other 5mm, and are set into the larger silver cross behind a rose crystal gemstone so they can only be viewed up close.

Many of those who presumed that they would be invited to King Charles's Coronation have been bemused, and emotionally bruised, after learning that their blithe assumptions were misplaced.

But Sarah, Duchess of York – omitted from the guest list because, it is said, she is still considered an 'embarrassment' – is made of sterner stuff, as she made radiantly clear at the London Book Fair at Olympia on Tuesday afternoon.

Indeed, it's apparent that, far from shrivelling up in self-pity, Fergie has been spurred on to plot the next step in her colourful life story.

After months of callously depicting the death of the late Princess Diana, Netflix bosses have decided to end the forthcoming series of The Crown on a high by featuring King Charles and Queen Camilla's wedding.

The streaming giant has come under scrutiny for remaking the Paris car crash that killed Diana, and the funeral that took place afterwards.

But following the controversy, which has upset members of the Royal Family, writer Peter Morgan will depict the wedding as the season finale – which will be the last series.

However, he realised this would come in the middle of a family holiday on the island Kos from May 3, ahead of his son Anthony’s wedding a week later, where he will be best man.

King Charles III and the Queen Consort, who have this weekend taken a trip to Balmoral, may be enjoying a relaxing getaway to 'feel closer' to Queen Elizabeth, a royal expert has said.

The late monarch, who herself was officially crowned 70 years ago, had taken a week of 'complete rest' in Scotland ahead of the festivities, and it's likely her son may be doing the same.

Charles, 74, and Camilla, 75, were last weekend pictured leaving Crathie Kirk Church in Aberdeenshire following a service, and appear to be enjoying some downtime together.

Midnight Coronation rehearsal sees military parade through empty London streets

The first rehearsal for the King's Coronation took place as military paraded through the quiet streets of central London in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The rehearsal was due to start at 10pm on Monday but was delayed, before hundreds of military personnel followed the route on horseback preparing for the coronation on May 6.

Charles and the Queen Consort will make their way back from Westminster Abbey via Parliament Square, along Whitehall, around Trafalgar Square, through Admiralty Arch and down The Mall back to Buckingham Palace.

The coronation procession stretches to just 1.3 miles - around a quarter of the length of the late Queen's five-mile celebratory journey which went through Piccadilly, Oxford Street and Regent Street.

The grand procession in 1953 took two hours and featured tens of thousands of participants, with the two-and-a-half mile cavalcade taking 45 minutes to pass any given point.

While there was no sight of it at the rehearsal, Charles and Camilla will be taken to Westminster Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach and return via the same route in the Gold State Coach.

The coronation will see the largest military ceremonial operation in 70 years, with more than 6,000 men and women of the UK's armed forces taking part in the historic royal event.

Sailors, soldiers, and aviators from across the UK and the breadth of the Commonwealth will accompany Charles and Camilla to and from Westminster Abbey

Nearly 400 armed forces personnel from at least 35 Commonwealth countries will also be on parade to mark the historic moment.

Will members of the public be able to watch the Coronation?

However, people will be allowed to line the streets as part of a procession through London to mark the event.

There will also be street parties as well as a coronation concert to commemorate the occasion, which will be held at Windsor Castle on Sunday, 7 May, 2023. Monday, 8 May, 2023, has been designated as a Bank Holiday as part of the celebrations.

When is the Coronation taking place?

The main event, the coronation, will take place on Saturday, 6 May, 2023.

In line with a tradition dating back centuries, King Charles III's coronation ceremony will be held at Westminster Abbey.

The ceremony will begin at 11am, once the royals have completed their arrival procession from Buckingham Palace. People can line the streets of London to catch a glimpse of the royals, with huge crowds expected given the significance of the event.

Following the ceremony, a return procession, following the same route back, will begin.

In the afternoon, 15 members of the royal family will gather on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the traditional fly-past to pay homage to Charles and Camilla.

King Charles is in danger of giving in to 'drips and dullards' by 'watering down' his Coronation.

The warning will set alarm bells ringing at Buckingham Palace because it comes from Ben Goldsmith, whose family have been close to the royals for decades.

'No amount of watering down will ever be enough for the drips and dullards who really want this kind of thing abolished altogether,' says the financier, whose sister, film producer Jemima Goldsmith, was one of Princess Diana's best friends.

'They represent a small, chippy minority who, for now, can be easily ignored. For the rest of us who enjoy the beauty of these ancient ceremonies, go big or go home.'

The Princess of Wales had to stay away from Balmoral while other senior royals rushed to the Queen's side for a final goodbye in order to prevent Meghan Markle going, a royal author has claimed.

Kate, 41, remained in Windsor to look after her children while the immediate family headed to Scotland to be at the late monarch's bedside when she died last September.

Biographer Robert Jobson - author of Our King - said the decision was taken to ensure Prince Harry didn't have an excuse to bring his wife, because he might have insisted if the Princess of Wales was there.

DAN WOOTTON:

With every revelation of yet another capitulation to destructive Prince Harry, I veer from thinking King Charles is weak and gormless to conceding he’s just a devastated dad doing all he can to get his wayward son back on side to stop him embarrassing his family and the country on an international scale.

What I do respect one hundred per cent, however, is the steely determination of our heir to the throne Prince William to give short shrift to the Duke of Delusion.

On his upcoming solo visit for the Coronation, Harry will be subjected to his older brother’s brutal silent treatment.

There will be no reconciliation talks; certainly not the public or private apology Harry and Meghan were laughably demanding up until just a few weeks ago.

Some 2,000 guests will join King Charles IIIQueen Consort Camilla and senior members of the Royal Family at Westminster Abbey on May 6 for the coronation.

These will include representatives of countries across the world - with politicians from Australia to Cyprus and Pakistan to Italy accepting a highly-prized invitation.

The latest world leader to reveal he will attend is France's President Emmanual Macron who said he wants to show his 'friendship, respect and esteem' for the UK.

Some are making the most of their trip, with Japan's Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko expected to stay at Claridge's in Mayfair for three days.

But others will have more of a fleeting visit, with King Felipe of Spain planning to fly to Seville after the ceremony for the Copa del Rey football final that evening.

In the article below, MailOnline looks at who has confirmed their attendance:

Prince Harry's solo attendance at the King's Coronation service in London next month is an 'ideal compromise' royal experts said, as it was confirmed Meghan Markle will remain in California with children Archie and Lilibet.

King Charles is reportedly 'pleased' with his son's decision, while the rest of the family will be 'relieved' at the news. Experts suggested an appearance by Meghan would have been particularly 'uncomfortable' for the Princess of Wales.

But the Duchess will stay home at the couple's residence in Montecito with one-year-old Lilibet and Archie, whose fourth birthday is on the same day as the ceremony, which will take place in just over three weeks time.

The news follows the enduring row between the Sussexes and the rest of the royals, which has become more heated in recent months following the release of Prince Harry's memoir Spare.

In his heart, Prince Harry knew for the best part of a month that he was going to be at his father's Coronation, writes Charlotte Griffiths.

What Harry has been describing as an 'in-and-out job', the fly-by visit will not allow him to catch up with that one-time inner core of UK-based friends, which now numbers only around six people.

Prince William has no plans to reunite with his younger brother when the Duke of Sussex visits the UK for the King's Coronation, reports say.

Royal analysts revealed that Harry, 38, had a heartfelt talk with his father on Saturday in an attempt to ease tensions, but has not addressed the ongoing dispute with William.

It is also understood that there will be no time for the pair to meet during Harry's trip for the May 6 event.

Ingrid Seward, editor of Majesty Magazine, told the newspaper that the royals all have 'really tight schedules' and she thinks Harry addressing his relationship with William is 'for another time'.
