An elderly couple are homeless after a car flew off the road and landed on the second story of their home - with their insurer refusing to pay.

Penny Arant, 75, and her husband Robert, 69, face a repair bill running into hundreds of thousands of dollars following Sunday's incident in Colfax, California.

A white Subaru roared off the road behind their home - which backs onto a hill - and landed on a porch, crashing through an upstairs window.

The driver of the car, who has not been identified, was severely-injured. It's unclear what caused the horrific crash.

Penny and Bob escaped unscathed - but have been told by their insurer AAA that their policy does not cover damage caused by a car landing on their roof.

AAA and the Arants have been contacted for comment.

Family friend Bobbie Cazares, who created a GoFundMe for the couple, explained: 'It is estimated that the home will need substantial repairs that are likely to cost in the hundreds of thousands.

'The Arants contacted their homeowners insurance agency AAA only to be told that they didn't have coverage for an automobile landing in their home. The driver's insurance will be responsible but it is unlikely that their coverage will be enough to cover that huge property damage.

'The home is now uninhabitable and will take an estimated 12 to 14 months at a minimum to repair / rebuild.'

Cazares added that the Arants had been left 'devastated' by the loss of their home and months of upheaval they now face.

The page has raised just $710 of its $100,000 goal as of Wednesday afternoon, meaning the Arants face an uncertain future.

Firefighters responded on Sunday to the report of a vehicle in the second story of a home on Robbers Ravine Road in the Cape Horn area of Placer County, just north of Sacramento.

Fire and law enforcement said they stabilized the carport the vehicle was resting on and using a ropes. Pacific Gas & Electric also shut off power to the area, authorities said.

Using a crane and a sling that wrapped around the car's rear window frames it was lifted out of the house.
