Revellers in Leeds and Newcastle use the bank holiday bonus of the King's three-day Coronation to get the party started early.

They could be seen hitting the town on Friday night to ring in the Coronation weekend.

Many were dressed up in England or Union Jack flags, while others sported colourful costumes and props.

Stunning video of Westminster just hours before it hosts King Charles III's Coronation has been released as the country holds its breath for the new monarch later today.

Anticipation hangs in the air in the royal church as its country sits expectant - waiting for the monarch to be crowned in the moment his whole life has been leading towards.

Blooming with flowers and with Britain's most sacred artefacts taking pride of place, the empty halls are shown off in all their glory in a poignant series of panning shots.

Posting the video on social media, the Royal Family simply captioned it: 'Westminster Abbey is ready for the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.'

Whether you’re stringing out bunting for a street party, planning a picnic with friends or hosting the family for a Bank Holiday lunch, there’s nothing like a Coronation to get everyone cooking up a celebratory feast.

Food has always played a part in the crowning of a new monarch — especially when that monarch, like King Charles, is such a staunch supporter of British farming and produce.

We’ll be hosting more than 100,000 Coronation Big Lunches — part of a community project of which Camilla is patron — and in excess of 50,000 street parties across the UK over the weekend.

As such, scones, clotted cream, cucumbers, shortbread, sausage rolls and ingredients for Victoria sponge cakes are all flying off supermarket shelves as millions of us stock up for the big day.

If you’re one of the many millions ringing in the celebrations, there’s one dish that’s guaranteed to impress — and make a stunning centrepiece for your Coronation table: an edible crown.

You can find this recipe and others in the article below:

While the weather might not be on side, at least the stars have put on a show for the Coronation

In what some may herald as a good omen, a meteor shower lit up the skies early this morning ahead of King Charles’s big day.

The Eta Aquariid meteor shower was forecast to peak – with up to 50 meteors per hour – from midnight until dawn.

It will continue until May 28. It is caused by the Earth passing through dust left over from Halley’s Comet, which is visible from Earth only every 76 years.

For over seven centuries, it has been the chair on which history is made. Today, it will be so again.

Made of oak, and with a lion at each of its feet, this high-backed seat of majesty, commissioned by King Edward I in 1296, is the most ancient artefact involved in King Charles III's Coronation: the Coronation Chair.

King Edward's (or Saint Edward's) Chair, to give it its correct name (it was named in honour of the 11th century monarch Edward the Confessor), is the oldest piece of furniture in the United Kingdom still used for its original purpose.

The intervening centuries have not always proved kind. 'It wouldn't look out of place in the Steptoes' junkyard,' commented a recent visitor to Westminster Abbey of the throne's appearance.

US Conservative firebrand Megyn Kelly came for the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle on the May 5th edition of her hugely popular SiriusXM show.

'I'm glad she's [Markle] not going. Who wants to sit and look at her try to pretend like she's there in any way supportive of the royal family? She hates them, despite the fact that they made her a megastar,' Kelly, 52, said.

Earlier this year, it emerged that Markle, 41, would not be attending her father-in-law's coronation as king and will remain at home in California with her and Prince Harry's children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

'They gave her all this opportunity to earn millions and millions of dollars ... And gave her a royal wedding and Diana's jewels and the Queen's and all of it. She hates them, so why would we have to look at her sitting there pretending otherwise? It was annoying enough at the Queen's funeral,' the former Fox News and NBC host said.

Camilla has been cheered by African conservationists for not backing down over the use of the Ivory Rod with Dove during the Coronation service.

The 3ft sceptre has been a fixture of the ceremony since the crowning of James II in 1685.

Despite the ivory having been taken from an elephant that had been dead for centuries, anti-hunting campaigners have called for it to be banned.

Camilla has refused to bow to pressure and will be adorned with it today.

I am lucky enough to have met King Charles III. I am honoured to be attending his Coronation. I admire him hugely, but for many years, I think I got him wrong, writes royal biographer GYLES BRANDRETH.

The reason? I knew his father — Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh — and I accepted the father's view of the son. And Prince Philip's view of Prince Charles was not always generous.

Patricia, who knew her cousin Philip well, told me she was 'absolutely certain' the Duke of Edinburgh loved his son and admired him, too, but she said she was 'equally certain' he never told him so.

In 1999, I raised all this with Prince Philip. 'And what about being at odds with Prince Charles?' I asked him. 'People say how different you are. I think you are remarkably similar, in mannerisms, in interests…'

The Duke of Edinburgh interrupted me. 'Yes,' he said drily, 'but with one great difference.

'He's a Romantic — and I'm a pragmatist. That means we do see things differently.'

I accepted the Duke's view then. But now — having seen Charles at closer quarters in recent years — I realise I was wrong.

Some will be looking out for the tiniest glimpse of the anointing (good luck with that) or the glint of the Great Star of Africa, the world’s largest diamond, in the head of the Sceptre.

Historians and theologians won’t know where to start. Royal-watchers will be waiting to see who steals the show. Prince HarryPrince Louis? The page boys.

And then there is the music...

Everyone, surely, will be waiting for that extraordinary moment when St Edward’s Crown is lowered and the cry echoes around the Abbey: ‘God save the King!’

However you may be intending to watch, it will be a day we remember for a long time. But what to look out for and when?

Eco-zealots from Just Stop Oil are plotting a graffiti attack on a monument in The Mall during the Coronation of King Charles.

Police have vowed hardline action against the hated eco mob, who are targeting memorials.

Just Stop Oil hope their action today will be their crowning 'masterpiece', although police hope to stomp out any of their attempts.

A former royal protection officer warned they could be shot if they disrupt the Coronation.

Prince GeorgePrincess Charlotte and Prince Louis are set to steal the show at their grandpa’s Coronation.

The youngsters will join the grand carriage procession back to Buckingham Palace after witnessing him being crowned at the Abbey.

The King and Queen will travel in the 261-year-old Gold State Coach, followed by three carriages carrying working members of the Royal Family.

In the first carriage behind them will be the Prince and Princess of Wales, along with George, nine, Charlotte, eight, and Louis, five.

George will also be a Page of Honour for the King.

It will be the biggest public test for the three siblings, who are becoming increasingly confident under the eyes of the watching world.

Prince Harry is not expected to play any part in today’s Coronation celebrations apart from his brief appearance at Westminster Abbey.

Sources have told the Mail that there are ‘no plans’ for him to join the Royal Family at Buckingham Palace, take part in the private family lunch or even appear in photos.

And he will not take part in the procession back from Westminster Abbey or join his family on the balcony for the traditional public appearance and flypast.

Instead, the King’s son – who is fifth in line to the throne – will be relegated to the ‘and also’s’ at the Abbey.

Students of royal history have been paying particular attention to one of the wood-panelled receiving rooms at Windsor Castle, writes Richard Kay, the Mail's Editor At Large.

A silk-striped sofa has been moved by 90 degrees and on a once-empty sideboard, a large white houseplant sits in a ceramic pot. The effect has been to transform this official corner of the ancient castle into a cosy and welcoming snug.

Elsewhere, there is a change to the art hanging on the walls and some unfamiliar pieces of furniture have appeared.

Slowly and steadily, the King is making his aesthetic mark on the ancestral seat of the monarchy where his late mother spent most of the last three years of her life and where his father, Prince Philip, died in 2021.

What makes this so intriguing is that for decades Charles spent as little time at Windsor as he possibly could, sweeping past the castle down the M4 from London to his beloved Highgrove in Gloucestershire without a backward glance.

The mother of all street parties has erupted on The Mall tonight as royal fans enjoy themselves ahead of the Coronation of King Charles.

Hundreds of revellers cracked open drinks, danced in the street and - fittingly - belted out songs by Queen as the big day inches closer.

Even a lack of toilets - the public loos close to the procession route appeared to be shut until tomorrow morning - couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of those there with more than half a day to spare.

The mood of the nation, if I have read it correctly, has been one of muted joy over the past few weeks. We are not in ecstasies. We are not in a state of hysterical euphoria. We are not like Catholics expecting the enthronement of a Pope, still less like music fans in an arena awaiting the arrival of our favourite rock star.

We certainly are not treating the Coronation as an excuse for saying how much we love the King personally, or indeed any of the Royal Family, some of whose members are not only bad jokes in themselves, but threaten to make the whole monarchical system itself seem like a bad joke. But, nonetheless, despite this, we are quietly and strangely happy.

‘I’m really looking forward to it,’ said the kind young woman at a lending library which I visit every few weeks. If she had been in her late middle-age, the remark would not have struck me as surprising. But she can’t be more than 25. She is of Bangladeshi origin, I’d guess. She wears the hijab. ‘We’re all looking forward to it, aren’t we?’

He has been waiting more than 70 years for this moment.

And King Charles III is now ready to finally embrace his day of destiny with the woman he loves by his side.

The longest-serving heir to the throne in British history will tomorrow be crowned at Westminster Abbey in a ceremony that is steeped in the majesty of his illustrious forebears – but also embraces and emphasises the proud diversity of modern-day Britain.

'There will be all the pomp and ceremony you could dream of, but as little of the 'them and us' as possible,' one senior royal aide said last night.

Crowned alongside the King, 74, will be his wife of 18 years – and his love for much, much longer.

The King and the Prince and Princess of Wales thrilled royal fans at The Mall as they made a surprise appearance to greet well-wishers this afternoon, less than 24 hours before the coronation.

The road leading to Buckingham Palace was cleared and royal fans eagerly lined the route, having likely figured out that they may well catch a glimpse of the new King due to the security and media presence.

The King laughed when asked by a man if he was 'nervous for tomorrow' and was was heard joking to some children, 'No school? You've done very well!' William told one woman 'I love your hair bow', while Kate told another person that the occasion 'is a great moment for celebration'.

People cheered and could be heard shouting 'God Save the King' as the senior figures of the monarchy arrived to shake hands with well-wishers. One woman told Charles: 'You look much younger in the flesh'  - causing him to jokingly grimace.

The bunting is on special offer and the excitement is building across the country for the first coronation most of us will have seen.

All but a privileged few will be watching it on TV (or in my case on a blanket in Hyde Park), but would it seem such a prospect for celebration if the ceremony lasted a buttock-paralysing five and half hours?

That’s how long Queen Victoria’s coronation took in 1838 - an unprecedented length even then, largely because no one had bothered to rehearse it.

Today we are used to royal ceremonies being immaculately organised - King Charles III has even had a to-scale stage built at Buckingham Palace to replicate the relevant area at Westminster Abbey - but this is a comparatively recent development.

This is the hilarious moment a member of the public unknowingly stormed past the Prince and Princess of Wales in Soho yesterday.

The royal couple visited the Dog and Duck pub in Soho yesterday afternoon to learn about how the establishment is gearing up for King Charles' coronation this weekend.

After greeting members of the public who had gathered on Bateman Street, Kate and William spoke with staff members outside of the pub.

But as they prepared to step through the doors, an unamused member of the public somehow managed to get past the barriers and brush past the couple on his way back from the pharmacy.

The hilarious video was captured by a TikTok user who had waited on the London street to catch a glimpse of the couple.

The man is believed to have unfurled a flag which read 'Abdicate Ma'am' - targeting the late Queen Elizabeth II - on The Mall this afternoon.

A subsequent search by officers found that he was carrying a suspected 'pointed or bladed article'.

For a few Americans, the chance to be in London for a British monarch's coronation is worth the transatlantic flight.

For others, it'll take place too early on Saturday morning to bother waking up and switching on the television.

Those are the findings of DailyMail.com/TIPP Poll on the popularity of King Charles III, his second wife Camilla, and a centuries-old institution that's had a tough few years and lost some of its lustre .

Charles has gotten off to a slow start on the other side of the pond.

Only 36 percent of Americans see him favourably, while a similar share — 31 percent — have an unfavourable view.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Wigston said there was a '50/50' chance of the flyover going ahead over The Mall and Buckingham Palace tomorrow due to a 70 per cent chance of heavy rain.

It comes as 'heavy' and 'thundery' downpours are expected in some parts of England over the rest of the Bank Holiday weekend.

'We have to be safe, we have to make sure that we aren't taking any unnecessary risks.'

It's been the biggest headache of all for Coronation organisers – how to hack back the guest list from the 8,000 invitees who attended Queen Elizabeth's service at Westminster Abbey in 1953 to just 2,300 tomorrow.

First step was to weed out the dukes and the peers, MPs and anyone else deemed surplus to requirements.

But the number was still so high that officials in the Lord Chamberlain's office at Buckingham Palace, who are responsible for organising the occasion, had to cut deeper.

As a result, very few of those lucky enough to have a beautifully-inscribed invitation drop through their doormat have been allowed to bring a 'plus one'.

The situation is now being referred to in aristocratic circles, only half-jokingly, as 'Slash the Spouses' – and even the wider royal family has been affected.

The Coronation Chair - which has been at the heart of the ceremony for over 700 years - is where the King will sit to be anointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

'We're supporting the King'

This group of royal fans camping out on The Mall have given the crowd a more youthful look as they hunker down for the night.

Henry (pictured bottom right) told MailOnline: 'I'm here because we're supporting the King and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. This is all of our first coronation.'

He joked that if Charles came to shake their hands he would try and give the King a 'big old smooch'.

Let’s meet some of the royal fans standing on The Mall this afternoon.

Joan, 70, told MailOnline that she met King Charles III during his walkabout today and was left in tears afterwards.

She said: ‘Charles stepped out of the car and walked towards us and he said ‘has anybody over-nighted’? And he was shaking a few hands and I said ‘yes, I did’ and he looked and he could see that my hair is really sticking up, and yes I am sleeping on the pavement.

‘He leaned forward purposefully and shook my hand, and it was just so beautiful - I am proud of being here today. Very emotional - I burst into tears afterwards. I have been here for William’s wedding, Harry’s wedding, the Jubilee and now I’ve come for the Coronation.

‘I wish himself and Camilla the very best. I think they’re both good people. I’ve been here since Wednesday afternoon, sleeping here. Before I just slept on the pavement but the security people suggested I’d get a tent because it’s going to rain.’

The King and the Prince and Princess of Wales thrilled royal fans at The Mall as they made a surprise appearance to greet well-wishers less than 24 hours before the coronation.

The road leading to Buckingham Palace was cleared and royal fans eagerly lined the route, having likely figured out that they may well catch a glimpse of the new King due to the security and media presence.

Ten million Brits have been banned from flying bunting in the lead up to King Charles' historic Coronation.

Killjoy councils have warned one in every five people that it is 'unlawful' to fly bunting amidst the last-minute scramble to organise street parties for His Majesty's big day.

Strict rules are enforced in numerous councils, following concerns that people could hurt themselves while erecting flags and that the bunting could distract drivers.

The news comes as Brits all over the country are going above and beyond to display their patriotism, with King Charles taking the throne in just over 24 hours.

An army of royal superfans have emerged from their tents and sleeping bags after an evening of partying on The Mall in the run up to the Coronation tomorrow.

Boozy celebrations and even a Motown soul disco took place last night among the crowds that have gathered along the procession route in London.

Ahead of the monarch's historic day, a sea of tents – dubbed 'King Charles' Camp' – appeared on the road leading from Buckingham Palace and with less than 48 hours to go, the royalists have been getting into the spirit of the celebration with gin, champagne and whiskey.

Patriotic campers swathed in Union Flags and stocked up with food, booze and bunting, many of whom also camped out for the Queen's funeral in September, are settled in for Saturday, when they will have a front row seat to watch the first Coronation procession for 70 years.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will remind millions to 'mind the gap' on train platforms across Britain this weekend.

Their Majesties have recorded an announcement which is being played between today and Monday - the Coronation weekend - at all railway stations across the UK and all London Underground stations.

In the message, the King begins by telling passengers: 'My wife and I wish you and your families a wonderful coronation weekend.'

Camilla then says: 'Wherever you are travelling, we hope you have a safe and pleasant journey.' The message concludes with Charles adding: 'And remember, please mind the gap.'

The full regal weight of the Crown Jewels will be on display at the Coronation , but it’s the jewel-encrusted Imperial State Crown that glitters brightest. It will dazzle on the King’s head as he leaves the Abbey, and thereafter for formal moments of his reign including the State Opening of Parliament.

More than any other jewel or symbol, this crown proclaims to the world that Charles is King. It symbolises monarchy, duty and a mystical power derived from its principal stones, the Cullinan II Diamond, the Black Prince’s Ruby, the Stuart Sapphire and, especially, the St Edward’s Sapphire, the sparkling square blue stone set into the diamond Maltese Cross on the top.

For no other gem in the world has a history like The Edward the Confessor Stone. It is the oldest in the Royal Collection and has been worn, in one form or another, by almost every English monarch for more than 1,000 years. Or so we have always been led to believe.

One of my few lasting regrets is that I failed to keep up my childhood collection of historically important newspapers, reporting the momentous events of my lifetime as they happened.

Born as I was in the year of the last Coronation , it might have grown into a fascinating archive of the history of the New Elizabethan Age as it unfolded, to be passed down to my children and grandchildren.

If I remember rightly, the earliest paper I kept recorded the world’s first manned space flight, by the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, which took place in 1961 when I was not yet eight. Other treasures in my collection included editions reporting the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, J. F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, the death and funeral of Sir Winston Churchill in 1965, England’s World Cup win in 1966, the Aberfan disaster that same year and the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.

Quite apart from Saturday's spectacular, we could see history made tomorrow. For Buckingham Palace will stage what could be the most high-powered party ever assembled in Britain when the VVIP guests invited to Saturday's Coronation arrive for Friday evening's reception being given by the King and Queen Consort at Buckingham Palace.

Neither the 2012 Olympics, nor the massive climate change conference COP26 pulled in a hundred heads of state and representatives of 200 governments. Nor, for that matter, did last September's state funeral of Elizabeth II, though it came very close (aside from the short notice, it also clashed with the United Nations General Assembly). It means Britain is in a rare and fortuitous position, according to the minister in charge of much of it.

Major broadcasters were last night accused of continuing to hold UK news publishers to ransom over access to live footage of the Coronation , even though publishing outlets have now reached an agreement with the Royal Household to use the livestream.

Despite publishers being given the go-ahead by the monarchy to use images from tomorrow, TV providers, including the BBC , ITN and Sky, continue to insist on imposing high costs to access the footage.

This has led to claims that they are trying to cash in on the historic event, rather than let it be seen as widely as possible.

When the former Mrs Camilla Parker Bowles says her devotions to God in Westminster Abbey tomorrow, she will be the first Queen Consort to be anointed since 1937.

The last, of course, was Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother , whose lifelong influence over her grandson Charles will reach its apogee in a ceremony that draws heavily on artefacts — among them robes and chairs — from the crowning of his grandparents.

This irony will not be lost on Queen Camilla. The former Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon transformed the fortunes of the monarchy: first as a steadfast supporter to her stumbling, stammering husband King George VI during the dark days of World War II and then, through the long years of widowhood, to her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II.

I can disclose that the grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth's cousins – including Lady Amelia Windsor , who was named as the 'most beautiful member of the Royal Family ' by Tatler magazine, and the King's godson Lord Nicholas Windsor – will not be at Westminster Abbey on Saturday.

And friends claim some of them are 'furious' at the snub. 'They can't understand why they haven't been invited when they were invited to every other state occasion,' one pal tells me.

On the night before his Coronation, what must King Charles be thinking? What will be running through his mind as he falls asleep hours before stepping up to embrace his destiny in front of the world?

Will he be like a child before Christmas, full of excitement and optimism? One sleep till crown time! Or will his thoughts be darker, filled with trepidation for the future and regret for the past? For the road less travelled, the unlived life, the discarded wife?

Charles waited nearly 74 years to become King, so he’s had enough time to think about it all. And it is noticeable that he spent his first six months on the throne being a busy, caring-sharing royal bee.

Despite my concerns about his obvious wokery and dangerous interventions into politics, I desperately want Charles III to succeed and, as a proud royalist, will happily pledge allegiance on Saturday to our new King.

I also believe Queen Camilla is a kind and well-intentioned woman with a good soul who never asked to be thrust into the midst of royal history by virtue of the man she happens to love.

But, for those of us who remain loyal to the memory of Princess Diana, the Coronation on Saturday poses an unprecedented moral challenge.
