Five-foot alligator is spotted wandering Florida's sewers

This is the moment a five-foot alligator was spotted roaming the sewage system of Florida last week.

The shocking footage was taken via a robot by the city of Oviedo's stormwater crew, who were investigating a series of potholes on May 5.

The four-wheel robotic camera is usually used to identify underground road defects such as leaky pipes.

But this underground expedition threw up an unexpected discovery as the machine moved towards a pair of eyes glowing in the dark.

'At first, they thought it was a toad', the workers wrote in the caption to the video uploaded to Facebook.

But it soon became clear 'when it turned around, they saw the long tail of the alligator and followed it through the pipes!' they added.

The beast is seen lying semi-submerged in the sewer water before backing up as the robot approaches.

As it comes into touching distance it turns around and marches off down the pipe.

The camera is able to follow the reptile a few feet further before becoming snagged on an indentation and the alligator waddles out of view.

It soon became clear it was an alligator 'when it turned around, they saw the long tail of the alligator and followed it through the pipes!'

It comes after a 4-foot-long alligator was discovered in a lake in Prospect Park, Brooklyn in February. 

The creature was found in an emaciated state and was taken for urgent care at the Bronx Zoo.

Unfortunately, it did not survive after a chronic ulcer developed as a result of the animal having eaten a bathtub stopper.

Zoo officials said the animal had died as a result of a 'tragic case of animal abuse' after its previous owners dumped it in the public waters. 

'This alligator suffered and died because its owner decided to dump her in a frigid lake, in an extremely debilitated state rather than provide her with the veterinary care that could have saved her,'  officials said.

They added: 'Wild animals are not pets.' The post-mortem revealed she had chronic weight loss, extreme anemia and skin and intestine infections.
