A Brazilian married man with children is under arrest for conning a woman into believing he was a medical school student and tricked her into giving over $800.
Fabio Siqueira was taken into custody Friday and indicted on an embezzlement charge, Goiás Civil Police said. He was released from jail.
The 35-year-old woman, who has not been identified by name, told authorities that she met Siqueira through an online dating app and dated him for two months before she discovered he had been lying.
Civil Police chief Yasser Yassine said Siqueira lied about being studying medicine at the University of Brasilia and even invited her to the graduation.
Police in Brazil arrested Fabio Siqueira on an embezzlement charged on Friday before shortly releasing him. The 39-year-old was accused by a 35-year-old woman of tricking her into believing he was a medical school student and conning her out of money
Fabio Siqueira is actually married with children and lied to a woman he met on an online dating app in Brazil that he was studying medicine at University of Brasilia and went as far as inviting her to his fake graduation
The woman is said to have spent $240 to purchase three dresses to attend Siqueira's bogus graduation, a mass and dinner, and gifted him approximately $400.
Siqueira on one occasion sent the victim photos of children he alleged were sick and received donations to help cover their medicinal expenses.
There was also the time when he lied about being infected with COVID-19 and of being diagnosed with thrombosis.
The woman felt sympathy for Siqueira's well-being and took out a loan to help him with the medical expenses.
It still took her some time to second guess the relationship after Siqueira began to expose her to a great deal of psychological pressure.
After some background research on him, she was able to discover that he was married with kids and filed a report with the police in the Federal District town of Formosa.
Authorities believe other women may have been conned by Siqueira and hope that anyone who was also deceived by him will come forward.
The incident comes on the heels of a 37-year-old woman from Pennsylvania who revealed that she was scammed out of $450,000 by a man who posed as a French wine trader after meeting him on Hinge, an online dating app.
Sheyra Datta, who is recently divorced, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the individual named Ancel Mali used an image of a German fitness influencer on his profile and chatted with her for several months before he convinced her into placing her savings into a bogus investment app.
She never met him in person and only spoke to him via video on two occasions, but still managed to fall in love with him.
'I was in a trance,' she said. 'It's like my psychology was hacked.'
