A couple who sold their home and moved into a solar-powered 45-foot Greyhound bus to travel the world with their two kids has revealed how making the switch helped them cut down their expenses immensely and helped make their family-of-four closer than ever.
Alex, 32, and Ashley Morris, 33, said they achieved the 'American dream' when they landed corporate jobs and purchased a house together in Port Huron, Michigan, in 2017 - but they felt like they were 'missing out' on important moments of their kids' lives due to their busy schedules.
After Alex lost his job in August 2019, they decided to say goodbye to they life they had built - and they, along with their two children, Declan, now nine, and Hadley, now five, left their abode to live in a trailer instead.
'We were both working full-time jobs, so our kids were pretty much being raised by a nanny. We just wanted that time with our kids,' Ashley explained to Insider recently.

'You get such a short window of time while your kids are little, and we felt like we were missing out on it.'
Alex added: 'We didn't want to miss out on it anymore. [After I lost my job] I started lining all these other opportunities up, and Ashley was like, "Let's go live on the road," because she'd been trying to convince me for years up until that point.'

The couple used his severance to first purchase an RV, before ultimately selling it and buying a $32,000 400-square-foot MCI 102DL3 greyhound bus.
They then had it transformed into their dream home, which cost them an additional $20,000.
It now has a kitchen with a working stove and oven, a small dining area with seating for four, and a living space with a TV and couch.
It also boasts a bathroom with a shower and full-sized bathtub, and a bedroom area that has bunk beds for the kids and a queen-sized bed that Ashley and Alex share. Next to their bed is a desk for Alex to work at.
The bus has electricity thanks to solar panels on the roof, and running water comes from a 75-gallon fresh water tank on board.
'We can spend weeks or months out in the middle of nowhere and be fine,' Alex said.

The family - who recently adopted a puppy, named Berkeley - have now visited 18 states, and since making the move, they've gotten to spend much more time together.
'[Every night], we all love to hang out outside while Alex cooks dinner, and we sit together as a family to eat,' Ashley dished.

'We go around the table and each person says what the best and worst part of our day was, then we talk about it.
'It's a great way to stay on the same page and help each other through our struggles and celebrate our victories.'
They've also saved a ton of money. On Instagram, Ashley broke down their monthly expenses, which includes gas - which costs them around $300 to $500 a month - food, cell phone and Wi-Fi bills, insurance, and car payments (they have a pickup truck which they attach to the bus).
'It's actually more affordable than living in our house was,' she insisted.
'We don't have to pay mortgage or rent, homeowners insurance, or property taxes. There's no electric or heating bill.
'You don't have to be rich to live a life of freedom and adventure.'
As for what an average day looks like for the family-of-four, Ashley explained to Insider, 'If we are in a campground then the kids are off playing with their friends and riding their bikes.
'If we are dry camping off-grid then we could be going on a hike and exploring as a family. Some days if we just want to relax, we hang around home and relax outside.'

When it comes to school, Declan is enrolled in an online curriculum while Hadley will do the same once she's old enough.
'Declan loves it because it's on the computer, and I think he thinks he's getting extra screen time when he does school,' Ashley explained.
Despite some hardships - like living in a small space and being away from their friends or family - Ashley and Alex said they wouldn't have it any other way.
'We own our home outright without the stress and burden of a mortgage or rent,' Ashley wrote in a video shared to her Instagram.
'We have everything we could ever want or need in this bus. We have all the comforts of home, while traveling and experiencing all kinds of new and exciting places.
'Living on this bus has changed our lives more than we could have ever imagined. It has allowed us to slow down and appreciate what we have in front of us.
'It has shown us that we don't need much to be truly happy in life. But most importantly, it has given us a freedom unlike anything we have ever thought was possible.'
