One person is killed and four are injured after San Francisco carjacking

One person is dead and four others are injured after a carjacked vehicle crashed into a bus stop and one other vehicle during a police chase in San Francisco.

Emergency crews responded to the scene according to the San Francisco Department of Emergency Services, with officials saying among those injured were bystanders and others involved in the pursuit.

Footage from the scene showed the mangled remains of two vehicles that had apparently hit a bus stop - debris could also be seen scattered across the busy intersection at 16th Street and Potrero Avenue.

San Francisco Fire Department Jonathon Baxter told Kron 4 that a 'total of five victims ranging from critical to serious condition' have been reported. 

The owner of Your New Barber, Hector Martinez, saw the aftermath of the crash and told missionlocal.com that first responders tried to resuscitate the person who died for 10 minutes, but were unsuccessful.

'It sounded like an explosion almost,' he said. 'I ran outside and I saw chaos.'

Martinez added that, as soon as he went outside, the suspect was sitting near the destroyed bus stop in handcuffs. 

He was detained at the scene after a 'physical struggle' and was taken to hospital, according to the outlet.

Officers with the San Francisco Police Department responded at about 10 am to the area of Folsom and Mabini streets on a report of a carjacking, SFPD said.

A vehicle matching the description was located near Kansas and 25th streets and led police on a pursuit.

After leading officers on a pursuit through city streets, the vehicle crashed. People have been advised to avoid the area and to expect traffic delays.

The incident is currently under investigation by SFPD, Baxter told the outlet.
