Yet the union of Tina Turner and her first husband Ike Turner was one marred in violence and abuse.

In fact, their almost 20-year relationship left Tina - who died on Wednesday at the age of 83 - physically battered, emotionally broken and financially ruined.

Tina Turner looked frail in one of her final public appearances when she attended the Broadway premiere of the musical about her life in 2019.

She was pictured sitting in most of the photos from the event and had help from her husband, Erwin Bach, and Oprah Winfrey while walking the red carpet.

The event was four years before Turner died on Wednesday at age 83 in her Switzerland home.

Turner made sporadic appearances after the 2019 red-carpet, but they weren't in public. A picture was posted on social media after the release of a documentary about her life. In 2021, she appeared in a video presentation for her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

'If they're still giving me awards at 81, I must have done something right,' Turner said through a pre-recorded video message, broadcast on October 30, 2021.

Tributes poured in as people remembered her finest moments. 

One video getting attention is Turner surprising Oprah Winfrey on her birthday and performing her hit The Best.

Tina flew in from Switzerland to perform on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2004 for Oprah's 50th birthday, and was introduced to the audience by John Travolta.

'My beloved queen. I love you endlessly,' the Love On Top singer shared a heartwarming message to her website

Oprah Winfrey has recalled how she had started out 'as a fan' of Turner’s and had followed her 'from show to show around the country' as a 'full-on groupie' before the pair eventually became 'real friends'.

'She is our forever goddess of rock ‘n’ roll who contained a magnitude of inner strength that grew throughout her life,' she wrote in a lengthy post on her Instagram, sharing multiple pictures from their long friendship.

'She was a role model not only for me but for the world. She encouraged a part of me I didn’t know existed.'

Winfrey added that she was 'grateful' for Turner’s courage and that her freedom from her domestic abuse had been 'a clarion call for triumph'.

'I’m grateful for her courage, for showing us what victory looks like wearing Manolos and a leather miniskirt,' she said.

'She once shared with me that when her time came to leave this earth, she would not be afraid, but excited and curious. Because she had learned how to LIVE surrounded by her beloved husband, Erwin, and friends.

'I am a better woman, a better human, because her life touched mine. She was indeed simply the best.'

The Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, who had collaborated on stage with Turner multiple times, paid tribute to his 'wonderful friend.'

Jagger also shared photos of himself duetting with Turner in Philadelphia at a 1985 Live Aid performance. The two sang State Of Shock and the classic Rolling Stones tune It's Only Rock 'N Roll (But I Like It).

'I'm so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner. She was truly and enormously talented performer and singer.

Biden hailed Turner's 'remarkable' personal strength, adding that she had 'changed American music forever'.

Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama shared a joint statement which described Turner as 'raw, powerful and unstoppable'.
