US flight delays hit more than 2,000

US flight delays have hit more than 2,000 on Wednesday after the FAA grounded flights out of LaGuardia.

Flights were also delayed out of New York's John F. Kennedy Airport, Newark International Airport and in Philadelphia.

According to data from Flight Aware, 32 percent of flights leaving LaGuardia were delayed, as were 40 percent departing the airport.

About 22 percent of flights coming into Newark were also delayed, as were 12 percent of its departing flights.

Canadian PM Trudeau says government is looking into creating federal disaster response organization

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government is looking into the possibility of creating a federal disaster response organization.

'We continue to discuss and look at new mechanisms and new ways of doing that,' he said.

'We need to continue to make sure we are doing everything possible to both keep Canadians safe when these extreme weather events hit, but also make sure we’re doing everything we can to predict, protect and act ahead of more of these events coming.'

As millions across the northeast became smothered by a blanket of hazardous smog from hundreds of Canadian wildfires' many were quick to try to make light of the situation.

The internet erupted with memes shortly after the thick haze shrouded the famous Big Apple skyline – with the city briefly becoming the most polluted city in the world.

Many were swift to point out the similarities between the bright orange smog and the landscape of Blade Runner 2049.

FAA lifts ground stop at LaGuardia

The Federal Aviation Administration has now lifted a ground stop for all flights into New York's LaGuardia Airport, but is continuing to delay some flights on the ground.

Delays are also in place at Newark International Airport, New York's John F Kennedy Airport and in Philadelphia. The average delay time is about half an hour.

Jodie Comer was forced to end a matinee showing of her Broadway play Prima Facie early after she was unable to breathe due to wildfire air blowing into New York City.

Comer, 30, said the air quality was preventing her from breathing before she was assisted off the stage by a stage manager around 10 minutes into Wednesday's show, eyewitnesses told Variety.

New York City's air quality on Wednesday was twice as bad as that in the usually smoggy Delhi, India, according to data from IQ Air.

The City had an Air Quality Index of 355, which is categorized as 'hazardous.' while Delhi was reporting an AQI of 168, which is 'unhealthy.'

Raging wildfires across Canada have caused thick smoke to spread south in the United States and brought dangerous levels of air pollution to the most populous parts of the country.

Hazy fog has blanketed the skies through parts of the Northeast and Midwest and reached New York City, Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore, Ohio Valley and Virginia.

And the smoke extends as far west as Minnesota, South Carolina and the Georgia-Florida border.

Those with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens should avoid physical outdoor activities, according to AirNow.

The New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies could both see their Major League Baseball games postponed tonight, as hazardous smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to wreak havoc across the east coast of America.

As it stands, both the Phillies and Yankees games are set to go ahead despite the smog and low air quality across the north east of the country, but MLB say they are 'closely monitoring' the situation and have the authority to call off games.

'This may be the first time we've experienced something like this on this magnitude,' he said. 'Let me be clear, it's not the last.

Flights delayed out of Newark International Airport

Flights have been delayed coming into and leaving New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport due to the heavy smog.

The average delay time is currently at 84 minutes.

NYC announces 'work suspension' for horses

The New York City Health Department has announced a 'work suspension' for all working horses.

How the wildfire spread smoke to the US

Canada is on fire from coast-to-coast with roughly 150 fires active in Quebec alone.

They were sparked by lightning earlier this month, but above-normal temperatures and dry conditions have helped fuel outbreaks across the country since May.

A storm system swirling off the coast of Nova Scotia in recent days forced the smoke from these fires south into the United States, and then east — toward some of the most densely populated areas in the country, according to the New York Times.

The US FAA announced on Wednesday it is grounding flights at New York's LaGuardia Airport due to low visibility as smoke envelops the Big Apple.

Data from Flight Aware, a flight tracking website, shows that there were at least 20 outbound flights scheduled to take off from the airport Wednesday afternoon.
