Is Nike preparing to unveil 'gender-inclusive' kids' clothing for Pride? Memo hints at new line

Nike is set to mark Pride Month with the launch of a 'gender inclusive' clothing line for children, according to an alleged email said to have been circulated with staff.

An email shared internally says the Beaverton, Oregon-based company will 'spotlight the pioneering gender-inclusive "Kids One Fit" apparel and unpack the conversation of trans inclusion in sport with a special screening of "Changing the Game"'.

Nike will host a string of events and activities through June and July under the theme 'Together We Are Undeniable', which they say will center on 'determination', celebrating community icons 'in light of recent attacks and restriction on the community and their allies'.

It comes only two months after a controversial partnership with face-of-Bud Light and trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney sparked backlash from women over the decision to give sponsorships for a women's line to a transgender woman, one woman going so far as to burn her bra in protest of Nike's deal.

It is not clear from the email obtained by the Daily Wire where the email came from within Nike.

But, it says, the new clothes line will be 'in collaboration with Nike Kids Design'.

Earlier this year, Nike announced its first ever gender-neutral athletic wear collection, including trainers and unisex clothing in a range of adult sizes.

Adidas has also released a Pride 2023 collection, which featured male-presenting models in women's swimsuits - for which they received backlash and support from divided spectators.

Target became one of the most notable stories when it launched a Pride collection including 'tuck-friendly' swimwear.

Earlier in June, it was reported the company had lost $12bn in market value since mid-May, with a former Target exec saying the campaign was its 'biggest mistake'.

The email obtained by the Daily Wire revealed that Nike has apparently pledged $600,000 to LGBTQ groups, including Camp Lightbulb, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and GLSEN.

On July 11, staff are given the opportunity to 'join the Human Rights Campaign, Portland Community Football Club’s Kaig Lightner, and OHSU Trans Health Program’s Dr. Blair Peters for a panel and Q&A to discuss policies impacting the transgender community.'

Dr. Blair Peters also received backlash last year for a since-deleted tweet remarking on having performed mastectomies for three young adults and adolescents in a day.

The surgeon claimed at the time that all had supportive parents present and 'you could see the family relief the second we wheeled back to the OR'.

More recently, Peters shared a message on Twitter addressing 'misinformation' and 'hate'.

'Gender affirming care is living giving. For some, it is life saving,' they said.

The Nike email also referred to Nike's inaugural Pride Community Fair.

The event on July 13 will spotlight local queer, women and minority-owned businesses and include 'activations like "Taco About It"' and a 'family-friendly Drag Story Time'.

While Oregon leans Democratic, it has seen conflict in the past over drag readings.

In October last year, a 'drag queen story event' led to violent clashes outside a bar.

ACLU records several proposed anti-LGBTQ+ bills affecting healthcare and education in Oregon.

There have been no successful efforts to ban such readings in the state at the time of writing.

Montana last month became the first state to specifically ban people dressed in drag from reading books to children at public schools and libraries.

Republican governor Greg Gianforte signed the bill because he 'believes it's wildly inappropriate for little kids, especially preschoolers and kids in elementary school, to be exposed to sexualized content,' spokesperson Kaitlin Price said.

The law is unique among efforts by states to block drag performances as it does not require a sexual element to a performance for it to be banned.

The status of trans women in sports has proven a point of contention in recent months.

At the end of May, Caitlyn Jenner spoke out after a trans woman made headlines for taking second place in a 1600-meter race.

The former Olympic decathlete wrote on Twitter: 'As "somewhat" of a track star myself, and a trans person, this is wrong!!!

She shared a link to her political action committee, Fairness First, which declares its aim to be to 'keep boys out of women's sports'.

After the race, Riley Gaines also called for female athletes to boycott events and give governing bodies 'a big thumbs down' after Johnson missed our on third place.

Gaines has become one of the louder voices arguing against the inclusion of trans athletes in women's sports.

Last year, she tied for fifth place against trans swimmer Lia Thomas at the NCAA championship.
