Buildings have been destroyed and cars thrown from the road by tornadoes sweeping through eastern Texas, hitting an area east of Dallas which is well used to serious storms.

Tornado warnings remained in place until 6:15pm local time on Wednesday in the towns of Canton, Van and Myrtle Springs.

Power cuts left 7,600 people without electricity, CBS 19 reported.

Footage shared on social media showed the moment the power went out in Queen City, a town in the far east of the state near the Louisiana and Arkansas border, shortly before 1pm.

The traffic lights and glare from the businesses surrounding an intersection suddenly go dark, with the storm blotting out the daylight.

Meanwhile, baseball-sized hail fell on Waxahachie, 30 miles south of downtown Dallas.

There were no reports of any casualties.

CBS 19 aired footage filmed near Domino, south of Queen City, which showed buildings with their roof ripped off, and cars with smashed windows.

The area east of Dallas was hit with a severe tornado in 2017, which killed four people and left 50 injured.

In May 2019, seven touched down in one day near Canton - with one recording winds of up to 125mph.

Forecasters say the risk of tornadoes remains high on Thursday, but falls by the weekend.
