Shakira recalls finding out her ex Gerard Pique 'betrayed' her while her father was in ICU

Shakira admitted that she did not think she was 'going to survive' after finding out her ex, Gerard Pique, 'betrayed' her while her father, William Mebarak Chadid, was in the ICU.

A year after announcing the end of her 11-year relationship with the Spanish soccer, 36, the superstar, 46, recalled how her dad flew 'to Barcelona to console' her as she was 'consumed with sadness because of' their separation.

'While he was at Milan's first communion, he was gravely injured in an accident. Everything happened at once. My home was falling apart,' she told People en Español.

She continued: 'I was finding out through the press that I had been betrayed while my dad was in the ICU.'

The mother-of-two, who shares two sons, Milan, ten, and Sasha, eight, with Piqué, expressed feeling devastated that she couldn't turn to dad, 91, for the advice she 'needed so much.'

During the interview, Shakira went on to say: 'The man I have loved the most in my life, my father, was leaving me when I needed him the most. I couldn't talk to him, or go to my best friend for the advice I needed so much.'

The Hips Don't Lie hitmaker noted that her father's recovery 'been very hard and slow.' 

The three-time Grammy winner also described her dad as a 'wonderful man and an endearing character who surprises us all with his strength.'

Speaking to his longtime marriage to her mother, Nidia Ripoll Torrado, Shakira said their relationship is  'a reflection of that dream that didn’t come true for' her.

Still, she hopes they serve as 'role models' to her kids as a good example of a healthy marriage. 

Shakira and Gerard split last year after 11 years together, and the sportsman has since been accused of cheating on her.

The singer realised her ex was having an affair when she discovered a jar of strawberry jam had been eaten while she was away.

Shakira then went onto reference this in a music video for her single Te Felicito in April, which featured a clip of a head of her collaborator Rauw Alejandro inside an open fridge.

According to ShowNews Today, Shakira knew that Gerard and their children didn't like strawberry jam, and so she sussed that someone else had been staying at their home when she found the jar.

Shakira returned home from a period of travelling when she noticed the jam in her fridge had been eaten, and she knew the rest of her family disliked it.

The singer appeared to allude to this in the music video for her single Te Felicito, where she can be seen opening a fridge to be greeted by Rauw's head.

Gerard has since gone public with his new girlfriend Clara Chia Marti, with Shakira even taking a swipe at her in her new diss track, which has since topped Spotify's Global Charts.

Shakira also didn't hold back in making digs at her former mother-in-law, setting up a terrifying lifesize witch doll on the balcony of her Spanish home which reportedly looked over her former mother in law's pad.

Shakira released a diss track aimed at her ex with producer Bizarrap, dubbed Shakira Bzrp Music Sessions 53, in Spanish back in January.

Residents in the area reported hearing Shakira 'blasting the song at full volume' from her former home, which includes lyrics aimed at his new girlfriend. The singer has since relocated to Miami.

Shakira, made it crystal clear she was referring to the 23-year-old her former partner is rumored to have started dating last year before they split, saying: 'I'm worth two 22's. You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo. You traded a Rolex for a Casio.'

While Shakira's new song features some barbed lyrics aimed at Gerard and his supposed new love as well as a few choice words for her ex-mother-in-law.

In the song, she sang the line: 'You left my mother-in-law as my neighbor, with the press at the door and the debt in the Treasury...'.

It had been reported that the relationship between Shakira and Montserrat Bernabéu [Gerard's mother] has turned sour after she readily welcomed her son's new romance.
