Dismembered body of missing Brazilian soccer player, 19, is found in a river

The dismembered body of a soccer player was discovered in a river in the southwestern Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul on Sunday.

Hugo Skulny, 19, had been missing since June 25 after he attended a party at a gas station with friends in the Pindoty Porã, Paraguay, police said.

He was last seen when one of his friends dropped him off near his former girlfriend's home in the Brazilian town of Sete Quedas.

Civil Police chief Lucelia Constantino said that Skulny's body parts were abandoned in the riverbed of the Iguatemi River in Sete Quedas, a town that borders Paraguay.

'The head was not found, only the hip, torso and thigh,' she said.

Authorities were able to identify Skulny due to a tattoo of his father, who passed away two years ago.

At least one suspect, whose name was not released by the police, has been arrested.

On Monday, the fire department resumed a search of the Iguatemi River to find Skulny's head.

His remains were transferred to the medical examiner's center in Ponta Porã for an autopsy.

Skulny lived with his maternal grandmother and brother in Sete Quedas, and played for the municipality's soccer club.

'They found him dead in the Iguatemi River, they cut him up,' his mother Eliana Skulny said, according to Campo Grande News. 'Such cruelty in the world, my God. My son was a good boy.'

The teenager had gotten a phone call from his grandmother around 3am and he told her that it was cool outside and that he would be returning home soon, his cousin Andressa Skulny told G1.

The family thought he decided not to come home and sleep elsewhere. 

'We didn't expect that this would have happened. The body parts were found, but the police didn't find my brother's head, the police said they won't stop until they find it,' she said. 'How dare anyone do that? This is cruel and without scruples.'

Hugo Skulny was a freshman in college and was majoring in physical education.

He also played for the Projetinho, a local municipality club.

'He was playing like never before, and he dreamed of soon standing out and being able to join a big team,' Andressa Skulny said. 'He was even a little impatient to achieve his goals soon.'
