A group of diners were left bemused after being charged $10 each for live music that played during their meal.

The four friends saw the charge added automatically to their check at the end of the meal.

In a Reddit thread, one of the diners' boyfriends uploaded a picture of the receipt showing they were charged £32 in total - or $41.

He wrote: 'GF and her friends were charged for live music at a restaurant. Is this a new thing? Never come across this before.'

The receipt also featured a 12.5 percent service charge - bringing the total bill to £190.63. It amounts to around $248.

The anonymous post did not specify where in the UK the restaurant was or what it was called.

It quickly racked up over 2,500 comments - with many other users amused by the charge.

One wrote: 'Imagine if they were deaf.'

Another said: 'Yea if you're gonna' charge then do it at the door. I'd be livid to see this on my bill.'

A third wrote: 'What if you didn't even go there for live music and went for the food and there happened to be live music? Yea, I wouldn't be happy with this.'

But many noted it was simply a 'cover charge' - a longstanding tradition whereby owners bill guests for an entrance fee.

However, these are usually charged or at least advertised upfront.
