New Jersey-bound Delta plane forced to return to Boston and man's carry-on luggage searched by bomb squad after cops got an anonymous tip that he made threats against the flight

A Delta flight from Boston to Newark was forced to divert back to Massachusetts midflight after authorities received an anonymous tip that a passenger on board had made threats to the safety of the plane.

An unidentified male passenger was escorted off the Embraer 175, with his two carry-on bags searched by bomb squad officials at Boston Logan Airport on Sunday.

The search was also carried out by bomb-sniffing canines, but resulted in nothing of note being found, and the passenger escaping charges.

An investigation involving the US domestic flight - identified as Delta Airlines Flight 5770 - is now underway, with officials so far revealing little as to the status of that probe, or the situation involving the unidentified man who had been reported.

Police in Massachusetts said the flight - which should have taken just over an hour - was disrupted after 'an anonymous third party' phoned cops to suggest the passenger had 'made threats related to the safety' of the plane.

A State Police spokesperson provided some more insight Sunday night on the still shrouded incident, which saw the plane do a complete loop around the southeast portion of the northeastern state shortly after its 5:30pm takeoff.

'Delta Airlines Flight 5770, Boston to Newark, returned to Logan Airport this afternoon after an anonymous third part caller reported to a New Jersey police agency that a passenger aboard the plane had allegedly made threats related to the safety of the flight,' Massachusetts State Police spokesperson David Procopio said.

Several more officials from the Massport fire and State Police force were waiting for the man at Boston Logan, as well as multiple officers from the State Police Bomb Squad.

A search of the passenger’s two carry-on bags by the officials and their explosive-detecting K-9s commenced, and no hazards were found, the statement said.

It also added that after the passenger and his bags were removed, the plane once again set off toward its destination at Newark International, following a delay of roughly three hours.

After that temporary grounding, flight records show the plane - which had seating for some 78 passengers -  departed from Boston for a second time at 9:43pm ET, before touching down in Jersey less than an hour later, at 10:34 pm.

As of early Monday, no passengers have come forward to describe their experience during the unforeseen detour, nor have officials named or offered anything identifying about the removed man, nor confirm whether he has been released.

According to officials' statement, the man's only luggage had been the two carry-ons, with none of his baggage checked.

Early Monday morning, officials were still vetting the incident - with reps at Delta referring any questions to Republic Airways, which was operating the flight for Delta.

Republic Airways has since apologized to passengers for the more-than-three-hour delay, but like Delta, have yet to offer an actual explanation.

As of Monday, it remains unclear who called in the tip about the passenger, and what spurred them to do so.

Officials say they are still looking into the incident, which comes during the busy summer travel season.

Delta has yet to issue a formal statement.
