Cinema fans flocked to theaters nearly two weeks ago to see two of the biggest movies of the year - Barbie and Oppenheimer - which resulted in the biggest week in the 103-year history of AMC Theatres chain.

Barbie is already on track to cross $1 billion worldwide, with $795 million after its first full week in theaters, with Oppenheimer at $412 million worldwide.

Now that fans have seen director Christopher Nolan's three-hour drama about the father of the atomic bomb - J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), many are taking to social media to discuss one particularly disturbing scene that shocked many.

One aspect of Oppenheimer's life that the film explores is the physicist's relationship with Jean Tatrock, played by Florence Pugh.

While Oppenheimer was still married to his wife Kitty (Emily Blunt), the physicist continued his relationship with Tatrock for some time.

That relationship came under even more scrutiny when it was learned that Tatrock was a member of the Communist Party, during a hearing to determine Oppenheimer's security clearance.

It's revealed towards the end of the film, though, that Tatrock took her own life, drowning herself in a bathtub, though one cryptic shot seems to hint otherwise - with a pair of black gloves seen pushing Tatrock's head into the water.

The shot is so quick that some have even wondered if that's what they really saw, and has also lead to some jumping to conclusions that aren't suicide.

Some believe that the shot was a manifestation of speculation by some historians - and Tatrock's own brother Hugh - that she was killed by government agents working on the top-secret Manhattan Project.

'Love how Nolan included the shot of the black gloves killing Pugh’s character for a split second because it reminded me of my lit teacher saying he absolutely believed the feds killed her when we were talking about Oppenheimer,' tweeted @boyIiker.

@helenayourdear added, 'The hazy appearance of the black gloves and even when Oppenheimer's duel with Roger Robb it reappeared very quickly, Nolan left me half-believing in Jean's death, raising the big question of whether this was a suicide or an assassination attempt.'

@NotYetSurgeon pointed out another eerie detail that would lend credence to the notion that the government killed Tatrock, tweeting, 'I cannot get the shot of the black glove out of my head especially after noticing that the FBI guy who's going through Oppenheimer's trash is also wearing black gloves!!!!'

Some believe that the black gloves shot is actually some sort of a manifestation of Oppenheimer's own guilt over her suicide, with the black gloves representing him seemingly driving her to suicide.

Many praised director Nolan for this haunting touch, noting that it was quite reminiscent of a horror movie, a genre Nolan has yet to tackle.
